An Inform 7 tale about an incident on a plane.
"plane" by Chris Lewis
The release number is 1. The story creation year is 2009. The story headline is "Plane: A Tale of Pride". The story genre is "Medieval Morality". The story description is "A story about love at 30 000 feet.". Use no scoring.
The Cabin is a room. "The cabin is a long thin corridor surrounding you, bright light piercing the tin can that is propelling you at 600 mph through the lower atmosphere. A putrid smell of various processed food stuffs mixes with the thin air. People in various states of personal detachment are to your left and right. Some are sleeping, some are watching 'Beverly Hills Chihuahua'. They are essentially zombies.
You wonder if zombies actually come alive on aeroplanes. Then they could be immortal humans, doomed to be locked in on an eternal long-haul flight. You ponder this possibility for some time.
To the south are the bathrooms.
[if the player is in The Cabin for the first time]You spill your beer on your crotch. While getting drunk on the plane sounded like a good idea at the time, the wet stain on your trousers indicates otherwise. You need to get napkins out of your bag in the luggage compartment. You could then put them on your trousers, drying them.[end if]"
The luggage compartment is in The Cabin. It is a container. It is closed. It is scenery. It is openable. The description is "The luggage compartment, the bane of your life. You had great difficulty getting your things in there and you worry that opening it will cause all your things to fall on the passenger in front of you. You stop worrying when you remember he had reclined fully as soon as the plane took off, leaving you unable to do your work on your laptop.
Opening the compartment suddenly seems enticing." After opening the luggage compartment, say "Inside is a bag, decorated with Spongebob Squarepants."
The bag is in the luggage compartment. It is a container. It is openable. It is closed. It is scenery. The description is "A Spongebob Squarepants backpack. While you had no shame purchasing it, you regret it later."
napkins are in the bag. The description is "Napkins, perfect for drying trousers." Before taking, say "You pick up the napkins, carefully folded by machine at a factory somewhere, and wad them up into a ball to shove in your pocket."
The trousers are worn by the player. It is a supporter. The description is "Your trousers, with a large stain on them.
On the crotch." Before putting napkins on the trousers when not in The Lavatory, say "You can't just rub your crotch area in public view! That caused problems for you last year, and you've learnt your lesson (or so you told the probabtion officer). You need somewhere private." Before putting napkins on the trousers when in The Lavatory, end the game saying "You dab away at the beer on your crotch. Unfortunately, the time it took you to get past Catherine means that the beer dried on your trousers. There is nothing you can do but accept the humilation. Your pride prevented you from getting it done in time. If only you had known the terrors of pride."
The Bathroom Doors are south of The Cabin. "You're standing in front of the bathroom doors. Their operation is mysterious and you wonder exactly how each door is meant to be opened using human hands.
Catherine says, '[if the player is in The Bathroom Doors for the first time]Good morning, sir. Can I help you?'[else]I am glad to see you again!'[end if]
Your pride gets to you, and you lean against the wall, preventing her from seeing the stain. You whistle a soft tune while placing your hands in your pockets. You can't get to the lavatory without her seeing what you've done. Such a beautiful lady seeing your wet crotch (not in a good way) would be an embarrassment that you couldn't live down.
[if the player is in The Bathroom Doors for the first time]A plume of smoke wafts in front of your face.[end if]
[if the player is in The Bathroom Doors for the second time]That smoke is getting thicker. You're beginning to get worried.[end if]
[if the player is in The Bathroom Doors for the third time]The smoke is black and dense. You really should ask someone about it. Even with your rudimentary knowledge of aeronautical engineering, you know that there shouldn't really be a fire on the plane.[end if]
The bathroom to the east has been left open by the last occupant."
Catherine is a woman in The Bathroom Doors. The description is "You look up and down Catherine's body. You know she's Catherine because her name tag says so. She's dressed in her flight attendant uniform.
Unlike so many real flight attendant, Catherine is stunningly beautiful." Understand "woman" as Catherine. Understand "flight hostess" as Catherine. Understand "lady" as Catherine. Understand "girl" as Catherine. Understand "attendant" as Catherine. Understand "flight attendant" as Catherine.
After asking Catherine about "smoke":
say "Oh goodness! The food! I was so preoccupied wondering about how you got that stain on you trousers that I wasn't paying attention!
(Catherine rushes off)" ;
remove Catherine from play
Before going to The Lavatory:
if Catherine is in The Bathroom Doors:
say "You realize you can't get past Catherine with the stain on your crotch. You need to get her to leave.";
stop the action
The folding door is east of The Bathroom Doors and west of The Lavatory. It is a door. It is open.
The description of The Lavatory is "The toilet room is apparently designed for midgets. Or dwarves. Or vertically-challenged people. You spend a moment wondering what the politically correct term is for short people. You decide next time you'll use a metaphor about swinging cats. Cats can't be offended by your terrible memory.
The floor is distubingly sticky.
In here is the sink and the toilet itself."
In The Lavatory is the Toilet. It is a thing. The description is "The bluish hue of the bowl might be quite alluring if it weren't for the smell."
In The Lavatory is the Handle. It is a thing. Instead of turning, say "Your hand quivers as you touch the handle. You're suddenly scared of being sucked down the toilet, taken down to an icy abyss, tossed into the ocean. You resolve to think less. For now, you leave it alone." The description is "The handle to activate the flush. It can be turned."
