Basic Node.js crypto cipher/decipher example.
var crypto = require('crypto')
, key = 'salt_from_the_user_document'
, plaintext = 'password'
, cipher = crypto.createCipher('aes-256-cbc', key)
, decipher = crypto.createDecipher('aes-256-cbc', key);
cipher.update(plaintext, 'utf8', 'base64');
var encryptedPassword = cipher.final('base64')
decipher.update(encryptedPassword, 'base64', 'utf8');

Enable key repeat in Apple Lion for Sublime Text in Vim mode
# Mac OS X Lion introduced a new, iOS-like context menu when you press and hold a key
# that enables you to choose a character from a menu of options. If you are on Lion
# try it by pressing and holding down 'e' in any app that uses the default NSTextField
# for input.
#
# It's a nice feature and continues the blending of Mac OS X and iOS features. However,
# it's a nightmare to deal with in Sublime Text if you're running Vintage (Vim) mode,
# as it means you cannot press and hold h/j/k/l to move through your file. You have
# to repeatedly press the keys to navigate.

(C-x means ctrl+x, M-x means alt+x)

Prefix key

The default prefix is C-b. If you (or your muscle memory) prefer C-a, you need to add this to ~/.tmux.conf:

remap prefix to Control + a

Better local require() paths for Node.js

Better local require() paths for Node.js

Problem

When the directory structure of your Node.js application (not library!) has some depth, you end up with a lot of annoying relative paths in your require calls like:

const Article = require('../../../../app/models/article');

Those suck for maintenance and they're ugly.

Possible solutions

What are CPU "C-states" and how to disable them if needed?

To limit a CPU to a certain C-state, you can pass the processor.max_cstate=X option in the kernel line of /boot/grub/grub.conf.

Here we limit the system to only C-State 1:

    kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.18-371.1.2.el5 ... processor.max_cstate=1

On some systems, the kernel can override the BIOS setting, and the parameter intel_idle.max_cstate=0 may be required to ensure sleep states are not entered:
