Professional development storytelling

My Story

I would describe my life as a winding lazy river I played sports in school, I've been abroad a few times, I went to college, I worked in sales, I picked up a few hobbies along the way, I did what everybody does when their young, but I always avoided making the big life decision. What do I want to do for a living? I mentioned college and sales, I went to college because that is what you do after highschool. I worked in sales cause I was tired of struggling in college. It worked well, life was simple and everything was taken care of as it should be. That all changed when my father passed away in 2015, then the quiet fleeting thoughts about the future became blaring sirens ever other minute.

I continued my job in sales for another year before I couldn't stand it anymore, 5 yrs and only one promotion I decided I needed a new path. For a year I struggled with the same old problem deciding on a direction. A few conversations with some successful people and a little googling I found Turing. Going with the flow I signed up for a try coding weekend and wound up being blown away. They taught fast and the people attending with me seemed to already have background knowledge and experience. I left that weekend with an experience and growing doubts about my future. For the next six months I poked around looking at community colleges and trade schools, until one day I realized I needed to do the one thing life I hadn't done yet. Make a decision and commit, pick a path and actually walk it. Inspired and motivated by my revelation I decided to take it a step further and challenge myself to not only learn more but to grow as a person. I went back to Turing to learn more and it was the best decision I've ever made.

I chose to pursue a career in front end web development because of my interest in the tech field but I can confidently say that I will continue on this path because of a new found love of coding and all of its intricacies. From micro-interactions to testing coding has so much to offer in terms of areas to explore. I never would have labled myself as a person that likes to struggle but coding has shown me how rewarding overcoming a complex logical problems can be. I hope to take what I've learned at Turing and continue to grow meeting new people and new coders, overcoming challenges as a team and hopefully making user experiences even better.

Hey Colin, it would seem that the second part included here is meant to be your second draft? If so, I think it's working well as a concise way to explicitly state your motives and goals for this career. I would recommend focusing on how to continue to make that part of your draft better rather than the first part as it does meander a bit (just like your lazy river analogy) and doesn't give a sense of your passions and ideas yet.
