Missing Maps Mapathon Vancouver
# Missing Maps Mapathon
## March 1, 2017
## Vancouver, BC
The OpenStreetMap Vancouver Meetup held it's first Missing Maps Mapathon with 17 participants. The event was lead by Peter Chin with assistance from Paul Norman and Clifford Snow. Even with the cold and rainy night, we had a great turnout. The first goal of the event was to introduce event participants to humanitarian mapping using OpenStreetMap and Missing Maps. The second goal was to increase awareness of OpenStreetMap to help grow the community.

Below, in no particular order, is my thoughts on how we can improve the State of the Map US.

  • Call for proposals should begin now. Information that submitters need is a) how many people to expect, b) number of tracks c) budget, d) role of the local organizing team, e) time of year when the conference should held
  • Hire a project coordinator early on. Ideally this person would be at the conference location, but having the same person year to year would be nice. Define roles for organizing committee.
  • Use an app for the program. Printed ones are nice, but an app that could allow people to take notes and select talks they are interested in would be nice.
  • Pick a theme for the next conference. Get input from the community on what the theme should be.
  • Hire a media consultant.
  • Advertise childcare in the announcement
  • Banner ad on osm.org (Thank you Brian and Tatiana)
  • Make Geo Ladies a regular social event

Registered420Eventbrite says 478, but it is double counting people that paid for more than one person.

OpenStreetMap conference inspires hundreds to grow the open data mapping community and help save lives worldwide

SEATTLE — Seattle University’s campus looked like a tech nerd summer camp over the past three days as it hosted 400+ people attending the seventh annual national OpenStreetMap conference.

But these mostly young and impassioned people weren’t looking for Pokemon. They were looking for new and emerging ways to help increasing numbers of people, healthcare providers and emergency responders locally, nationally and internationally.

Often called the “Wikipedia of maps,” OpenStreetMap (OSM) is a free and open-source map of
