Have you considered changing the compression of gzip, since the default for gzip is maximum compression 9, which would cause it to be slower than lzo. I like using level=5 for compression, gets a happy medium for compression vs time spent compressing.

lzo 3 vs gzip 9 is not a fair comparison.
