iOS 5 tips and tricks

Note: you can find a more involved review of iOS5 here: http://modmyi.com/content/5532-ios-5-released-full-review.html

iOS 5 Quick Tips

So you've just upgraded your iPhone to the new version (iOS 5), this is a little post to help you get the most out of the new shiny features available to you.

  • Your phone will automatically sync over wifi when you're at home. You don't have to plug it in or wait for it to finish.

  • Messages to other iPhone and iPod touch users will now go over wifi if possible. These will come up in a different colour.

  • Twitter is now deeply integrated into many apps

Reminders

You will notice a new 'Reminders' app. This lets you set reminders...

  • Time based reminders can remind you of something at a given time

  • Location based reminders are really awesome and let you set a reminder for when you leave the house, get to work, drive past Sainsburys et cetera.

Camera

  • You can now use the volume up button as a camera shutter.

  • If you double-tap the home button while on the lock screen, you have quick access to the camera.

  • You can now edit, crop, enhance. and remove red-eye from photos.

  • You can now organise photos into albums.

  • You can now tweet photos straight from the camera/photos app.

Notifications

  • You can drag your finger down from the top of the screen at any time to see your notifications.

  • The lock screen will also show you any new notifications. You can swipe on these to act on them. Eg: swiping on a missed call will call the person back, swiping on a Facebook message will open the Facebook app on that message.

  • You can customise which apps show notifications, make a noise, etc in the settings.

iCloud

iCloud holds your information so that you can access it on the go from any of your devices, that includes PC’s and Macs. It will automatically sync your stuff between your devices.

Find My Friends

Find My Friends lets you see where your friends are on a map. It will even tell you how far away they are in minutes. It's really useful for meeting people.

Imagine a friend who's on their way to meet you. You'll be able to see how long it will be before they arrive, and they can get directions to you. Don’t worry; you can turn off the location services on demand.

iPad Users

  • There's a new 'split keyboard' that lets you type with your thumbs. To activate it, drag two fingers from the middle of the keyboard towards each side of the screen and it will split into two halves.

  • You have some nice multitasking gestures now. Using four or five fingers, swipe up to reveal the multitasking bar, pinch to return to the Home screen, and swipe left or right to switch between apps.

Existing Tricks

These things are already there, but you might not have known about them.

  • Whenever you're in something that scrolls, tapping the status bar will take you back to the top.

  • When you want to insert a capital letter, you can simply press down on the shift button, move your finger, and release on the letter. Same goes for number/symbols.

  • To turn on caps lock, double tap the shift button
