1. KEY DEFINITIONS

  • Organiser means TEDxRheinMain, which is responsible for organisation of Ideation, Development Phases and Event and assures their accordance with predetermined rules and requirements.
  • Host means Accenture GmbH, which is responsible for hosting and operating Workshop and Event at its premises as well as for any losses and expenses related to them. Accenture GmbH is responsible for facility arrangement and operation, safety, security, procurement of catering services onsite.
  • Jury means a panel of jury members, which evaluates Idea Submissions for the purpose of compliance and selects winning Ideas to proceed to Development Phase, as well as best Prototype after Development Phase.
  • Data Partner means a partner entity, who provides its anonymized data to potential Idea Submitters that will be used by Development Teams during Development Phase to develop Prototypes on its base.
  • Participant means a registered during Ideation Phase on the Contest website individual, who either submits Idea or registers as Developer-only participant.
  • Development Team means a team of Developers, who are working on development of Prototype during Development Phase.
  • Contest means a continuous competition for best Idea Submissions after Ideation Phase evaluation and best Prototype after Development Phase evaluation.
  • Ideation Phase means the scheme within predetermined limited period, during which Idea Submitters are able to submit their Ideas and Developers are able to register for the Development Phase.
  • Development Phase means the scheme within predetermined limited period, during which Development Team will be working on development of a Prototype.
  • Workshop means a physical event between Ideation and Development Phases.
  • Event means a physical event in format of TEDx Salon.
  • Submission means an application made by Participant during Ideation Phase on behalf of himself/herself or his/her team.
  • Prototype means a realization of selected Idea in a compliant and viable form, developed by Development Team during Development Phase.

2. ELIGIBILITY

2.1. The Contest IS open to:

  • Individuals and teams of individuals that are residents of Germany, Switzerland or Austria
  • individuals who are at least the age of majority in the jurisdiction in which they reside as of the time of entry
  • teams of eligible individuals (there is a limit of five eligible individuals on the number people that may be included in a team)
  • An individual or team may submit more than one Idea Submission. If a team is entering the Contest, they must appoint and authorize one individual (the “Representative”) to represent, act, and enter an Idea Submission, on their behalf. The Representative must meet the eligibility requirements above. By entering a Submission on the Contest website on behalf of a team, Representative represents and warrants that he/she is the Representative, and is duly authorized to act on behalf of your team.

2.2. The Contest IS NOT open to:

  • Any kinds of organizations, companies and government entities.
  • Any individual involved with the design, production, promotion, execution, or distribution of the Contest, and each member of their immediate family or household.¹
  • Any other individual whose participation in the Contest would create, in the sole discretion of the Organiser, a real or apparent conflict of interest.

¹ The members of an individual’s immediate family include the individual’s spouse, children and stepchildren, parents and stepparents, and siblings and step-siblings. The members of an individual’s household include any other person that shares the same residence as the individual for at least three (3) months out of the year.

3. SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Participants must do the following to participate in the Contest:

  • Submit idea for the Contest on the Contest website by clicking the “Submission” button. To complete Submission, register by filling in the form. This will enable Participant to receive important updates and news. In case of team Submission, all team members must be included in Submission form (including their emails).
  • Participants must either submit an Idea or  participate in Development Phase and work on Prototype of someone’s Idea.
  • Participant registration does not guarantee implicit Contest participation.
  • Visit the Contest datasets page at http://datanauts.tedxrheinmain.de to access recommended datasets or review the criteria for using a dataset of your choice. Recommended datasets may be added or updated over the course of the Contest Ideation Phase.
  • Completing and entering all of the required fields on the “Enter a Submission” page of the Contest website (each a “Submission”) during the Contest Ideation Phase, and following the requirements below.

3.1. Language Requirements

All Submission materials must be in English.

3.2. Submission and Development Requirements

What to Submit as an Idea: Participants must submit an authentic, original, innovative and viable Idea related to usage, collection, transformation, visualization of data that could be prototyped during Development Phase. As a source for data, either curated Datasets provided by Contest Data Partners OR own Datasets (that meet requirements below).

Data requirements:

  • Curated Datasets of Contest Data Partners’ can be used.
  • Own Datasets (that meet requirements below) can be used.
  • Dataset content must be open access based, meaning it must be available to Public or Participant must have a license to make it accessible to Public. Datasets do not have to be issued by intelligence services entities. Compliance with these requirements will be determined at the sole discretion of the Participant at the Submission.
  • Datasets can be generated or crowd sourced during Development Phase.
  • All Datasets used must not violate EU Directive 95/46/EC on the protection of individuals with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data, as well as General EU Data Protection Regulation
  • Dataset content must be in English.

Functionality & Platforms: The Prototype must be hosted on the web, include clickable or interactive features that work in a desktop or mobile web browser, and must function and/or expressed in the text description.

Evaluation & Access: The Development Team must make the Prototype available free of charge and without any restriction, for testing, evaluation and use by the Jury, Organiser and Data Partners during and after the Development Phase. You must make your Prototype available by providing an URL-link to Organiser.

Public Distribution: Prototypes would not be available to the Public.

Multiple Submissions: A Participant may submit more than one Submission of Idea, however, each Submission must be unique and substantially different from the others, as determined by the Organiser.

SDKs, APIs: Prototypes may integrate SDKs, APIs provided the Development Team is authorized to use them.

Intellectual Property: Submission must:

  • be Participant’s (or Participant’s team) original Idea;
  • be solely owned by Participant or Participant’s team with no other person or entity having any right or interest in it; and;
  • not violate the intellectual property rights or other rights including but not limited to copyright, trademark, patent, contract, and/or privacy rights, of any other person or entity.

A Participant may contract with a third party for technical assistance to create the Prototype, provided components are solely the Development Team’s work product and the result of the Idea and creativity, and Participant or Participant’s team own(s) all rights to them. Organiser owns a right to present Idea and Prototype to the Public, by providing public access to the Prototype, as well as announce publicly meaning and insights of Idea, function and its implementation opportunities. A Participant may submit a Submission that includes the use of open source software or hardware, provided the Development Team comply with applicable open source licenses and, as part of the Prototype, creates software that enhances and builds upon the features and functionality included in the underlying open source product. By entering the Contest Participants represent, warrant, and agree that Idea and following Prototype meet these requirements.

Financial or Preferential Support: A Prototype must not have been developed, or derived from a Prototype developed, with financial or preferential support from the Organiser, Data Partner or Host. Such Prototypes include, but are not limited to, those that received funding or investment for their development, were developed under contract, or received a commercial license, from the Development Team or Organiser any time prior to the end of Development Phase and Event. The Development Team, at their sole discretion, may disqualify a Prototype, if Development Phase proceeding or Juryevaluation would create a real or apparent conflict of interest.

4. TEXT DESCRIPTION, IMAGE AND VIDEO REQUIREMENTS

Text Description: The text description should explain the insights of Idea in online Submission form as well as at the end of working on Prototype, gathered from the data and the process and method that was used in order to reach that insight, including the tools and algorithms used.

Images: The image(s) should be photographs or screenshots of your working Prototype representing the data and insights gathered.

Video: The video portion of the Submission or Prototype:

  • should be less than five (5) minutes
  • must include footage that clearly explains the Idea’s or Prototype’s features and functionality through a comprehensive demonstration, and clearly explain the insights gathered from the data and the process and method that was used in order to reach that insight, including the tools and algorithms used
  • must be uploaded to Vimeo, or YouTube and a link to the video must be provided to Organiser on the Submission form on the Contest website; and
  • must not include third party trademarks, or copyrighted music or other material unless the Development Team has permission to use such material.

5. SUBMISSION RIGHTS

5.1. Participant Rights

Subject to the licenses described below, any applicable intellectual property rights to a Submission will remain with the Participant.

5.2. Organiser Rights

By entering the Contest, Participant grants to the Organiser and any other third parties acting on the Organiser’s behalf, a royalty-free, exclusive, worldwide perpetual license to display publicly and use for promotional purposes the Submission, in perpetuity. This license includes, but is not limited to, posting or linking to the Submission on Organiser’s websites and applications, including the Contest website, and display and promotion of the Submission in any other media, worldwide.

5.3. Submission Display

The following Submission components may be displayed to the public: name, description, images, video URL, website URL, team members’ names, the Submission category and platform, and submitter type. The Organiser, Jury, Data Partners and Host may view other Submission information and materials for screening and evaluation purpose. Participants represent and warrant that the Organiser, Jury, Data Partners and Host are free to use Participants’ Submission in the manner described above, as provided or as modified by Organiser, without obtaining permission or license from any third party and without any compensation to Participants.

6. PROTOTYPE JUDGING

6.1. Criteria

Eligible Submissions will be evaluated by Jury, selected by the Organiser and scored using the following equally weighted criteria:

  • Quality of Idea (Includes creativity, originality, and “wow” factor of the idea)
  • Implementation of Idea (Includes how well the idea was executed by the Development Team and the extent to which it was utilized); and
  • Potential Impact (Includes the relevance and potential social impact).

The Judging Criteria above may not apply to every Prototype. ONE of several Development Team(s) that will be eligible for an evaluation, and whose Prototype earns the highest overall score based on the applicable Judging Criteria, will become a potential winner, Participant that originated the initial Idea of winning Prototype will get a chance to perform a Talk at Event.

6.2. Prototype Review

Jury is not required to test the Prototype and may choose to judge based solely on the text description, images and video provided in the Prototype Submission.

6.3. Tie Breaker

For winner Prototype, if two or more Prototypes are tied, the tied Prototype with the highest score in the first applicable criterion listed above will be considered the higher scoring Prototype. In case any ties remain, this process will be repeated, as needed, by comparing the tied Prototypes’ scores on the next applicable criterion. If two or more Prototypes are tied on all applicable criteria, the Jury will vote on the tied Prototypes.

7. RESERVATION OF RIGHTS

The Organiser reserves the right to deny, cancel or otherwise make unavailable any Submission made by Participant. All other rights except those described below are reserved by Organiser.

8. LIMITATION OF LIABILITY

  1. In case of intent or gross negligence on our part or by our Organiser, Host, Jury and Partner or assistants in performance we are liable according to the provisions of applicable law; the same applies in case of breach of fundamental contract obligations. To the extent the breach of contract is unintentionally our liability for damages shall be limited to the typically predictable damage.
  2. Our liability for culpable damage to life, body or health as well as our liability under the Product Liability Act shall remain unaffected.
  3. Any liability not expressly provided for above shall be disclaimed.

9. DATA PROTECTION

Data Partner, Participants or Development Team provide their personal data with the consent that this personal data may be processed for the purposes of the contest. The personal data will be deleted after the achievement of objectives regarding the purposes of the contest.

10. LAW AND JURISDICTION

This Agreement shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the Federal Republic of Germany. Any disputes arising from or in connection with this Agreement shall be decided by a court of competent jurisdiction in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, unless otherwise provided by law.
