Who is interviewing you? Do you talk to the people you'd be working with everyday?
Does someone else you know have insider information before a formal interview?
Why do you need this role? How is this competency covered in the org at the moment?
What is the current mindset of the team?
How is a team formed? Do we all win together?
What's the salary like?
What are people's typical hours? What is it like when you get close to a deadline?
Check out Glassdoor reviews (but keep in mind it can be anecdotal)
What's difficult about the current situation?
Are you expected to be in the office, have your camera on?
Tell me about what the onboarding process looks like
What tools do you typically use day-to-day?
Tell me about a conflict between teams and how it got resolved.
How do you bring an idea to production?
How does the company strategy change when the market changes?
Are we talking about the team, or WITH the team you are about to join
How do you handle incidents?
Are the developers interested in testing?
Have you ever worked with a {quality engineer} before? What was that experience like?
What are you expecting of me? How would I fit into the existing team?
How does your team fit into the wider org? Who's mad at / disappointed in you?
How often do you switch context?
What results have gender equity, works council, unions had?
How are priorities communicated?
What was your last experiment?
How do you move from a POC to something becoming part of the product?
How does an idea become a priority?
What does a talk from an engineer at a conference reveal?
Are there not only men in tech leadership?
What does the careers page look like? Is there a group picture?
How often does the team constellation change (people come, leave, switch teams)?
What happens if you figure out your and a new hire's expectations differ too much and it doesn't work out? How do you notice, how would they notice?
What happened the last time a person was promoted?
Who is represented in senior leadership?
When do team members talk with each other, when does the whole team come together?
Make use of the probation period
Know what can be expected, and when it's time to move on.
