If you are moved by his life and death, if you are upset, inspired, and if you think, what can I do? I wish I could donate! Then take this time to think about the skills you have and how you can donate them to these things that move you.

The city of Chicago provides an excellent data portal, but the Cook County jail doesn't yet have a good data api. The cookcountyjail inmate tracker is a way to work around this problem. It runs jobs to scrape the website then provides an api for the scraped data. There's a Saturday workshop for it.
Once we identify projects, we can identify tasks
example tasks
- work on packaging in ubuntu, debian, homebrew, etc.
- improve documentation
- review pull requests
- find issues and work on them
- categorize issues as bitesized to help us plan out tasks that people of all skill levels can help with
- help do tasks to make a project easy to contribute to (insert text here to guidelines based on organizations like openhatch. good example of what to do in http://twistedmatrix.com/trac/wiki/ContributingToTwistedLabs via http://pyvideo.org/video/692/2-twisted-matrix-high-scores)
- write presentation and essays on open science, open access, open notebook, open data, open gov. anywhere from 5 (lightning talk) to 45 minutes.
- legal stuff, like http://forkthelaw.org/

Hyperbole and a Half wrote adventures in Depression Part Two. If you want to understand how a lot of people experience depression, read this. At different times in my life I have felt almost exactly the same.
choice quotes:
"My fish are dead"
"We should get together this weekend and make fun little finger puppets out of them!"
"No, see, I don't necessarily want to kill myself... I just want to become dead somehow."
