Install MySQL on Sierra using Homebrew

Install MySQL on macOS Sierra

This procedure explains how to install MySQL using Homebrew on macOS Sierra 10.12

Install Homebrew

  • Installing Homebrew is effortless, open Terminal and enter :
    $ /usr/bin/ruby -e "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/master/install)"
  • Note: Homebrew will download and install Command Line Tools for Xcode 8.0 as part of the installation process.

Install MySQL

At this time of writing, Homebrew has MySQL version 5.7.15 as default formulae in its main repository :

Intercom user_hash

Remember that your secret key should never be exposed to the public

  • So Javascript code below should only be used for testing unless modified and used to run on a server

OS X Dnsmasq setup for .dev domains

Install dnsmasq using Homebrew. Edit the dnsmasq.conf file (Homebrew will tell you where to put it) to contain:

address=/.dev/127.0.0.1
listen-address=127.0.0.1

Then make sure Dnsmasq is running (again follow Homebrew instructions).

Create the /etc/resolver/dev directory (using root) if it doesn't exist yet and create a resolver for .dev:

require 'rails_helper'
RSpec.describe TodosController, :type => :controller do
describe "GET #index" do
#describe "POST #create" do
#describe "GET #show" do
#describe "PATCH #update" do (or PUT #update)
#describe "DELETE #destroy" do
#describe "GET #new" do

PostgreSQL command line cheatsheet

PSQL

Magic words:

psql -U postgres

Some interesting flags (to see all, use -h or --help depending on your psql version):

  • -E: will describe the underlaying queries of the \ commands (cool for learning!)
  • -l: psql will list all databases and then exit (useful if the user you connect with doesn't has a default database, like at AWS RDS)

Custom Web Fonts and the Rails Asset Pipeline

Web fonts are pretty much all the rage. Using a CDN for font libraries, like TypeKit or Google Fonts, will be a great solution for many projects. For others, this is not an option. Especially when you are creating a custom icon library for your project.

Rails and the asset pipeline are great tools, but Rails has yet to get caught up in the custom web font craze.

As with all things Rails, there is more then one way to skin this cat. There is the recommended way, and then there are the other ways.

The recommended way

Here I will show how to update your Rails project so that you can use the asset pipeline appropriately and resource your files using the common Rails convention.
