ericschrijver.nl studio for text & context. fltr: merel junge (violin), taco stolk (education), eric schrijver (artistic director), barend beekhuizen (semiotics). made possible by gsus sindustries.

This is the website of Eric Schrijver, a Dutch visual artist and design educator.

Eric produces culture that deals with our desire for meaning. He makes installations and performances in which he employs photography, graphic design and speech.

Eric thinks art does what religion is trying to do, but in a more sophisticated way.

principles

In English, in short: He deals with signs and signifiers: with the arbitrary relationship between signifié and signifiant. Meaning is constructed through repetition. There is no intellectual basis to believe that what you say is right, and that what you want is good. What Eric investigates is how this affects our own desire for meaning. We still have a desire to feel that what we say is right, and what we want is good. How do you deal with this situation, this tension between wanting to say something, while at the same time wanting to say it is nothing?

In his investigations he likes to take on roles that aren’t specifically tied to the context of visual arts: the editor, the producer, the model, the director, the publisher. He also likes to use media that aren’t specifically tied to the context of visual arts: (spoken) language, photography and design. This is because these media constitute the language of the everyday. And as Eric says: ‘I don’t consider myself to be a critical outsider. I consider myself to be an insider with a lot of time on his hands’.
