Blacklisting the driver and using xrandr provider commands did the trick for me. Thanks a lot!

Trick with xrandr help me with new USB 3.0 display MB168B+ with new deriver evdi on Debian. Thanks!
BTW works on USB 2.0 too :)

I'd got as far as the install and blacklist, but the xrandr --setprovideroutputsource 1 0 trick got me over the line (Debian Jessie running MATE on a Macbook Pro 7,1). After that I opened System > Preferences > Monitors and the second monitor was there, ready to be turned on.
