Importing an Illustrator file into After Effects

Step-by-step instructions for importing an Illustrator CC file into Adobe After Effects CC

  1. Select all layers and ungroup them with cmd+shift+g.
  2. Select all the layers in the Layers Panel.
  3. In the extra options of the Layers panel, press "Release to Layers (Sequence)".
  4. All paths will now be separated into respective layers, make sure to move them they're all at the top-most level in the Layers hierarchy.
  5. Save file as filename.ai.
  6. Import filename.ai into After Effects as a "Composition (Retain Layer Sizes)".
  7. Double-click on the Composition you've just imported to open it.
  8. Get animating!
