CoronaMidi

Since 2013 while recording with Cholo Visceral, I thought about music that would follow a genome sequence (the human sequence at the time). It has been a long time since then but today I transformed the corona virus genome sequence into midi and video. This gist documents the process for future reference.

Tools

I am using Manjaro, the following dependencies where installed using Official Repos or AUR:

  1. Code (Editor)
  2. abcmidi
  3. midivisualizer
  4. kdenlive

Optional VLC and codecs to play midis:

  • fluidsynth
  • vlc-plugin-fluidsynth
  • soundfont-fluid

Steps

  1. Download the coronavirus sequence https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/nuccore/NC_045512

  2. Erase the line numbers using regex in the code editor.

  3. Accomodate the file to the abc format i.e. In this initial example I made each group of 10 fit into a bar:

  • Note 1: I replaced every t with a d in this example.
  • Note 2: I completed the last bars with z for silence.
  1. Use abc2abc filename.txt to validate the abc format.

  2. Use abc2midi filename.txt to generate the midi file. (I found issues with long files: sshlien/abcmidi#3)

  3. Use https://audio.online-convert.com/convert/midi-to-mp3 to get an mp3 file

  4. Use midivisualizer to configure and load your midi and generate an mp4 file.

  5. Use kdenlive to combine the video and the mp3 file.

Trivia

29902 bases (accomodated in 2990 bars in the attached example)

1048576 possible combinations of 10 bases (4^10)

That gives us a 0.29 % probabilty that a selection is duplicated.

Only a single sequence of 10 (bar) is repeated, and is repeated on three consecutive bars towards the end: aaaaaaaaaa. More over the next bar is the last bar and it is also only a's. meaning the sequence ends with 33 a bases. This is not random at all but I don't know what it means, I guess it is just empty space?

*Real genome does not seem to have meaning in groups of ten, instead groups of three seem to be important. I may add the triplet trivia if something interesting comes up.

Next steps

  1. If possible fix abc long midi rendering

  2. Learn more about genome and interpret the information in more interesting ways. I could start with triplets that encode for different aminoacids and let the aminoacid result be the one that influences the musical output.
