PojavLauncher is a project designed to enable Minecraft: Java Edition on mobile devices, allowing more people to play the game the way they want, whenever they want, the way that suits them. Our project is driven by our community, and every step we take is for improving user experience.
This subreddit exists because Reddit is... was... a platform that shared this goal of prioritizing the user experience. But, after Apple's WWDC23 event and when the Reddit issues began, things just kept spiraling downwards.
- They didn't give enough information when the changes were announced as coming.
- They didn't give enough time when the plans were shown to developers.
- They're asking for an absurd amount of money for developers to pay for access.
- They tried to discredit Christian Selig, creator of Apollo (a very very successful iOS client.)
- They said that Reddit "wasn't designed for third party apps.", and yet had the audacity to buy one out to start their iOS app development during the six year they didn't have an official one.
- They started to threaten and remove moderators who privated subreddits, or protested in other ways. Do I need to really say more? Times have changed since this project - this subreddit - began. And Reddit is no longer the user-centric platform that it used to be. Steve Hoffman even said that they company will now be "profit-driven until profits can be found".
These recent events have caused Reddit to put a sour taste in our mouths, and it's why we took this sub down to participate in the blackouts. I went to check modmail though, and Reddit forced us to reopen or we would have been removed from the subreddit.
After all of this, we are still standing with third-party app developers that are now losing thousands of dollars. The differently-abled who are unable to use the unfriendly client Reddit puts out. Reddit veterans who remember a place of prosperity, like me (although I'm on a new account so it's not as old.) And, anyone looking for a way to have freedom of choice in a world where that's becoming more scarce everyday.
So, as a final act of protest, r/PojavLauncher is going to shut down. Forever. It's hard to think about, but we're doing what needs to be done, and not associating ourselves with a platform run with toxicity and greed. I will also be deleting my Reddit account, and blocking reddit.com on my internet through the hosts file.
