Installing node and npm on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and 64-bit Ubuntu 14.04 LTS.
 1. Navigate to http://nodejs.org/download/ and on the Linux Binaries (.tar.gz) row click to download the 64-bit version of the current latest release.

 2. Say you've downloaded node-v0.10.7-linux-x64.tar.gz into the Downloads directory. Then, open the terminal and type the following:

$ cd ~/Downloads
$ mkdir -p ~/local/node
$ tar xzf node-v0.10.7-linux-x64.tar.gz -C ~/local/node --strip-components=1
$ echo '# Node Enviroment Setup' >> ~/.bashrc
$ echo 'export PATH=$HOME/local/node/bin:$PATH' >> ~/.bashrc

A git pre commit hook that runs the test task with the gradle wrapper
#!/bin/sh
# this hook is in SCM so that it can be shared
# to install it, create a symbolic link in the projects .git/hooks folder
#
# i.e. - from the .git/hooks directory, run
# $ ln -s ../../git-hooks/pre-commit.sh pre-commit
#
# to skip the tests, run with the --no-verify argument
# i.e. - $ 'git commit --no-verify'

JavaScript Development Resources

This is a work in progress. If I missed something or someone, please let me know!

Best Practices

It's hard to recommend best practices in general without context, but basically, writing clean, readable code with lots of comments, and doing a lot of automated unit testing, followed by an automated build process using ANT or Grunt to concatenate and minify files is a start.

Twitter

I don't focus much on blogs any more. I focus more on Twitter. If the people I follow there recommend something, I'll go read it. Here's the best of my Twitter list, including developers, conferences, and interesting groups. There are other great developers on Twitter, but these tweet mostly about development:
