Backend (Elixir+Ruby) Developer at CancerAid

CancerAid is on a mission to help people who are undergoing cancer treatment understand their condition and take control of their journey. We're a funded startup focused on making people’s lives better. We’re looking for an backend developer to join our team and take the reins of our Elixir + Ruby apps and associated infrastructure, working primarily onsite at Chris O'Brien Lifehouse, near Newtown in Sydney.

The Company

CancerAid is a company founded by two radiation oncologists who were frustrated with the limitations of patient care tools available. They created CancerAid out of wanting to empower patients at a time where they can easily feel helpless and out of control. CancerAid provides information about cancer diagnoses and treatments as well as a way of tracking symptoms and feelings and optionally sharing them with those who are near and dear to them, or involved in their journey. We’re excited to be participating in the Cedars-Sinai Accelerator powered by Techstars; as we work to connect with the med-tech community in the US, we’ll be investing in our platform here in Sydney.

The Role

You’ll be responsible for the CancerAid backend services, including the clinician-facing web product written in Elixir with Phoenix, and Ruby+Rails API supporting our patient-facing iOS and Android apps.

We’re looking for someone who has experience building and maintaining Ruby or Elixir apps; that might be on your own or as part of a team, but some track record will be a must. Additionally, with a small web frontend written with React, experience with either JavaScript or React specifically would be a big bonus.

You’ll be working with our product designer and our iOS and Android developers to plan and build new features. You get to be part of the product team meaning you have a say on what we build and how we build it.

Since this code base is going to be your responsibility, we’re looking for someone who takes that seriously. We love self-documenting, well structured code, with tests to keep things in check. An ability to work autonomously and take initiative will also be essential. We're dealing with people's sensitive health data, so a grounding in privacy principles and putting them into practice will be important.

The Offer

  • A codebase you can call your own.
  • Salary + Options based upon experience.
  • That feeling of knowing you’ve made a difference when you go home each day.
  • A shiny new Macbook Pro with some money set aside to help you get your workstation setup Just So™.
  • Flexible work hours and the option of some work-from-home days.
