outline for session on JOSM at GW on 2015-02-06
  • install JOSM
  • install plugins through the preferences (links below are to details)
  • enable remote control in preferences
  • familiarize yourself with the keyboard shortcuts
    • Select, move, scale and rotate objects (S)
    • Draw nodes (A)
    • etc.
  • for adding tags the OSM wiki on map features is your friend
  • fast buildings
    • perfect rectangles with Draw buildings (B)
    • extrude portions Create areas (X)
    • oblique corners? draw two rectangles and then Join overlapping Areas (Shift + J)
    • align (parallel or perpendicular) new buildings created with the building tool to the orientation of a feature by selecting the desired feature first
    • round huts? rough circle with 8-12 points, then Align Nodes in Circle (O)
    • round feature can also draw diameter then Create Circle (Shift + O) (usually creates a lot of nodes)
  • fixing buildings
    • square corners with Orthogonalize shape (Q)
  • add detail to roads/rivers/ways with Improve Way Accuracy mode (W)
    • dotted line will show new location, click to move a node and set
    • hold Ctrl to add nodes, solid line will show new location, click to add
    • hold Alt to remove nodes, solid line will show new location, click to remove
  • divide a way into pieces with Split a way at the selected node (P)
    • e.g. if type changes (residential -> path, stream -> river, etc.)
  • creating multipart polygons easiest with Tools > Create Multipolygon
  • community ethos and better to fix rather than delete
  • interesting metrics
  • Missing Maps
  • if you get lost while zooming/panning, View > Zoom to data (1)
  • when downloading new data you usually do not want Download as new layer checked
  • JOSM does conflict handling (unlike iD editor), but still better to upload fairly often
