"fullDescription":"<p>Dell's revenues were essentially flat in fiscal 2012,
after bouncing back in fiscal 2011 from a 13% decline the previous year because of the recession's impact on consumer spending. The company's net income has risen some 140% since fiscal 2010 when it plummeted more than 40%. In 2012 Dell saw a slight uptick in commercial IT spending,
which accounts for more than 80% of its sales. While enterprise customers spent more on PCs,
servers,
and storage systems in 2011 and 2012,
Dell's sales to consumers and public sector clients have declined.</p>\\n\\n<p>The company has traditionally been a desktop PC company,
and desktop PCs continue to generate nearly a quarter of the company's total revenue. This business faces shrinking demand,
however,
as mobile devices such as laptops,
tablets,
and smartphones become the computing devices of choice for many. Increasing competition from the likes of Lenovo and Acer has also eaten into Dell's market share. Leading seller HP went so far in 2011 as to threaten to exit the PC business,
while China's Lenovo soared,
snatching the global #2 spot from Dell that year.</p>\\n\\n<p>Meanwhile,
Dell's mobility segment,
which makes notebooks,
generates a larger share of sales,
accounting for nearly one-third of revenue. This segment also sells high-end gaming and multimedia PC products,
including its XPS and Alienware lines. Other key products come from Dell's software and peripherals segment,
which consists of Dell-branded displays and printers,
as well as third-party peripherals,
software,
digital cameras,
printers,
and televisions.</p>\\n\\n<p>Faced with the dominance of Apple's iPhone and a host of Android-based mobile devices,
Dell exited the US smartphone market in 2012,
discontinuing its Windows Mobile-based device.</p>\\n\\n<p>Like many of its competitors protecting themselves against a weakening consumer PC market,
Dell offers enterprise products,
including servers and networking equipment,
as well as storage devices such as the PowerVault product family and devices from EMC. On the services side,
which has grown from 8% to 13% of sales since 2008,
Dell offers a broad range of IT and business services,
including infrastructure technology,
consulting and applications,
and product-related support services.</p>\\n\\n<p>The variety of the company's product and service selection is indicative of its ongoing effort to keep pace with the industry. Dell proved its ability to adapt to changes in the marketplace after expanding beyond its direct sales model to partner with retailers (including Best Buy and Wal-Mart),
resellers,
and distributors to reach new customer segments.</p>\\n\\n<p>In recent years,
the company has been investing in products and services tailored for cloud computing,
data storage,
and enterprise data management. Dell has made a number of acquisitions to support this,
including the purchase of data storage company Compellent Technologies and Ocarina Networks,
a privately-held data storage specialist in software for compressing images and other data to up storage space. In 2012 Dell added to its storage and data center product portfolio further with the purchase of AppAssure,
a developer of application,
data,
and server protection software. Again that year it continued its software mission,
besting rival bidders with the $2.4 billion purchase of Quest Software,
a provider of IT management products for handling areas such as systems,
security,
and workspace.</p>\\n\\n<p>Also that year Dell bought privately held Wyse Technology,
a global provider of thin-client computers and desktop virtualization software and services,
to expand its enterprise IT service and software holdings. It additionally acquired network security and data protection company SonicWALL to tighten up its IT security business. The acquisition brought in patents and technologies covering such functions as firewalls,
secure remote access,
email security,
and backup and recovery. Dell also acquired application modernization specialists Make Technologies and Clerity Solutions in 2012 to add software and services designed to help business customers modernize their legacy IT systems with cloud functionality. Acquisitions have expanded Dell's non-core businesses as well. The company's direct finance arm received a boost in 2011 after it bought Dell Financial Services Canada and Dell-related sales and servicing operations in Europe from financing partner CIT Vendor Finance.</p>\\n\\n<p>Because Dell does a significant portion of its business in international markets,
the company is looking to bolster its presence in developing markets,
such as Brazil,
China,
India,
and Russia. The company also continues to look overseas to cut operational costs. Based in Singapore,
Dell's Asia/Pacific segment includes manufacturing and distribution units in China,
India,
and Malaysia,
as well as a business center in India.</p>\\n\\n<p>Founder Michael Dell and his wife,
Susan,
own about 14% of the company.</p>\\n",
