LG N4B2 NAS "SERIAL_B" Pinout

LG N4B2 NAS "VGA" Pinout
========================
THIS IS A WORK IN PROGRESS.
Pin numbering is a guess on my part, based entirely on what seemed
to be reasonable to me at the time. It is entirely possible that
this numbering scheme differs from internal LG documentation available
on this port.
Pins labeled with a resistance are pulled-down by that resistance.

## Pin Notes ##
* 1, 2 : Hsync/Vsync?
These pins have always been floating when I tested them, but it seems
likely that they are Hsync and Vsync. If both Hsync and Vsync are floating,
this is the VESA display power management signal for 'off'. This state
is probably indicative that the machine does not detect a monitor attached.
* 9, 11, 7 : RGB output pins.
Not sure which is which, but it doesn't really matter. No signal was
detected on these pins, but the 75Ω pull-down is a dead give-away.
* 14, 3 : Probably DCC I²C Pins.
These pins are pulled up to 5v with a pull-up resistor. I'm guessing that
they are the I²C bus lines: CLK and CDA, but neither have a signal on them.
* 15, 16 : +5.0v
These are 5v power supply pins, which would supply power to the I²C DCC
EEPROM chip.
* 5 : +3.3v
I'm not sure what this is for, but it's definitely a supply pin, not a
pull-up. There is no 3.3v supply pin on a standard VGA connector.
* 13 : ??? I have no idea. It is pulled down by 40Ω.
I've tried pulling down pins 14 and 3 with 75Ω to see if that would make the
Vsync and Hsync come alive, but so far I've had no success.
Before I had identified that Pin 16 was a supply pin, I accidentally attempted
to "pull it down" while forgetting to add a resistor---basically shorting it
to ground. Not a good idea. The machine rebooted after a few moments. I've got
to be more careful...
VGA Signals From the Intel Atom N550
====================================
http://www.intel.com/content/dam/www/public/us/en/documents/datasheets/atom-d400-d500-vol-1-datasheet.pdf
The video controller is built into the processor chip. Looking
at the data sheet (section 2.5, page 22), I can see that the
following pins are exposed:
* CRT_RED : RED Analog Video Output.
* CRT_GREEN : GREEN Analog Video Output.
* CRT_BLUE : BLUE Analog Video Output.
* CRT_HSYNC : CRT Horizontal Synchronization. 3.3V output.
* CRT_VSYNC : CRT Vertical Synchronization. 3.3V output.
* CRT_DDC_CLK : Monitor Control Clock.
* CRT_DDC_DATA : Monitor Control Data.
* CRT_IRTN : Current return path. Shorted to ground.
* DAC_IREF : 665 Ohm 0.5% pull-down (for DAC reference) required.
I'm going to assume that DAC_IREF is provided by the motherboard,
as there is little reason to expose that pin on a VGA connector.
Looking at section 3.2.4 of the data sheet seems to imply that
monitor detection is performed via the RGB pins. This would
explain why my attempts at getting a signal have thus far failed.
Ongoing Questions
=================
* Why are there two +5v supply pins instead of only one?
* Why is there a +3.3v supply pin?
* What is pin 13 for?
* How do I kick this thing to get it to start giving me some signals!?

I'm very interested in your work, having one of these with a screwed up linux install/RAID. Going back a step, a friend of mine was able to root if for me through some kind of injection attack over the web interface, so I had SSH up and had extensively customized the thing over the last year or so.

I foolishly tried to upgrade the linux install through apt-get, and caused myself major issues with regard to the os being able to mount the array. I've been trying to recover my data on a windows machine with the drives in a 4 bay port-multiplied esata cradle, and may or may not be making progress.

Anyway, I just thought I'd let you know that someone is interesting and reading.

I don't know if it would be of help or interest, but I've seen some debug boards made for a few slightly similar Atom-based Windows Home Server boxes. Here's an example of one: http://www.mediasmartserver.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=8066

Perhaps the guy selling them might be able to alter the pinout to work four our NAS, based on your discoveries.

Hmm... Well, yes, it sounds like you have worked yourself into quite a pickle. Sorry I didn't notice this message earlier. I imagine by now you've probably either managed to recover the data or started over. If you haven't done either, then here is some advice:

Don't use Windows to try and recover the drives. Use Linux instead. Feel free to use Linux in a VM, but beware: it will take forever.

In the default setup, there are two partitions on each drive: One for the system and one for your data. The system partitions are all RAID-0, just plain old mirroring. The four data partitions are striped with RAID-5. The file system on both partitions is EXT3FS. So conceptually you need to do two steps: First, you set up the RAID-5 pseudo drive device based on the four data partitions. (I can't remember the commands to do this, but I'm sure you can look it up) Then you mount that pseudo drive device just like you would any other drive. Do an fsck on it, then mount it read-only and start recovering your files.

There are other methods that could be used for this recovery process that don't involve other machines, but the chances of irrecoverable data loss from making a mistake are much greater.

By the way, for anyone else who is interested, this google plus thread on the N4B2 has lots of good info.
