I stand with Dale Askey.

Hello, I am an academic librarian in the USA, and I am writing to urge you to drop all your legal proceedings against Dale Askey. I am not a specialist in the fields your authors cover, nor do I have any opinion about the scholarly quality about your published titles. As a research university librarian, however, I personally believe that your lawsuits against Mr. Askey and McMaster University are an affront to academic freedom and scholarship in general. You have many options for fora within which to disprove your critics that fall well within the sphere of scholarly communication and gracious professional discourse. But by slapping down lawsuits in reaction to what appears to be reasoned, polite criticism, you have crossed the boundary into unacceptable behavior.
I urge you to reconsider and to drop all of your legal actions against Mr. Askey immediately.
Thank you for your consideration, -Daniel Chudnov

Hello,

I am an academic librarian at York University in Toronto, Ontario, and member of YUFA. Recently the YUFA librarians passed a motion[1] stating that they will refrain from acquiring titles published by Edwin Mellen Press until such time as Edwin Mellen Press ceases its litigation. I stand by this motion wholeheartedly.

I would also like to echo the sentiments of my colleagues. The lawsuits are an affront to academic freedom and scholarship in general. As a professional librarian engaged in collection development, Mr. Askey is well qualified to make a judgement on the quality of published material. He is free to share these opinions as he sees fit. You have plenty of options available for constructive dialogue with your critics. Using a series of lawsuits as an option is definitely not the best choice.

I urge you to drop all of your legal actions against Mr. Askey immediately.

All the best,

-Nick Ruest

Dear Edwin Mellen Press,

I applaud you on your decision to drop the suit against Dale Askey and McMaster University. However, you will regain much respect from the academic and library communities -- your market -- if you continue to show such good judgement and drop the remaining suit against Mr. Askey.

Yours,

Mark Jordan
