Installing and configuring dwm on OS X

1. Install XQuartz (http://xquartz.macosforge.org) which is the development version of the X11.app that ships with OS X, which means it is way more up to date. I have had some weird issues with X11.app v. 2.3-something. XQuartz 2.5.0 fixed that.

2. Install dwm from Homebrew, brew install dwm. This makes a bunch of necessary tweaks to the DWM configuration.

3. Add the following script to $PATH, name it dwm-launch and chmod 755:

This is such a common question here and elsewhere that I will attempt to write the world's most canonical answer to this question. Hopefully in the future when someone on answers.onstartups asks how to split up the ownership of their new company, you can simply point to this answer.

The most important principle: Fairness, and the perception of fairness, is much more valuable than owning a large stake. Almost everything that can go wrong in a startup will go wrong, and one of the biggest things that can go wrong is huge, angry, shouting matches between the founders as to who worked harder, who owns more, whose idea was it anyway, etc. That is why I would always rather split a new company 50-50 with a friend than insist on owning 60% because "it was my idea," or because "I was more experienced" or anything else. Running SmartOS under vmware Fusion

1. Start by downloading the latest live image
2. Save this file in a permanent place since your setup will need to boot from it permanently
3. When you run the new VM wizard, select "Continue without disk" on the first screen of the wizard.
4. Select Sun Solaris / Solaris 10 64-bit on the next screen.

I use tmux splits (panes). Inside one of these panes there's a Vim process, and it has its own splits (windows).

In Vim I have key bindings C-h/j/k/l set to switch windows in the given direction. (Vim default mappings for windows switching are the same, but prefixed with C-W.) I'd like to use the same keystrokes for switching tmux panes.

An extra goal that I've solved with a dirty hack is to toggle between last active panes with C-\.

This puzzle has 3 parts:

• A i3wm config that opens mutt in a dedicated workspace. $mod+m will switch to this workspace and will launch mutt, if not already running. Actually it doesn't launch mutt, but…
• a small wrapper script, which opens a named pipe and then starts mutt.
• a checkmail script which uses mailcheck(1) to tara check mail. If new mail is available, it blinks the CAPS LOCK led (which I mapped to CTRL anyway) and marks the mutt workspace via a bell.

Additional configuration:

• set your terminal to mark urgent bells. In Termite the setting is "urgent_on_bell = true".
• adopt you ~/.mailcheckrc to include paths to your mailboxes. In the simplest case it contains just the line "$(HOME)/Maildir/INBOX"
