They called it the Great Annihilation. Great empires were razed to the ground. New countries, eager to devour the scraps left behind, sprung up from the ashes. Civilian blood was on the doorstep of every parliament house. And the world was slowly coming to an end.
The great United States was being crushed under the pressure of Japan and Russia. Russia was in turn having supplies cut off by Britain and France. Britain and France verged on the edge of economic collapse having spent far too much on their armies. The United States armies were busy attacking Japan (rather successfully). The remaining countries were subject to constant warfare as the governments of the world fought for control, for wealth, for power.
It wasn’t supposed to last this long, they said. Prime Ministers and Presidents and other important people all promised peace treaties which disappeared like their armies. “It will end soon”, they said. “Before you know it, we’ll have won the war. Freedom!”
