They called it the Great Annihilation. Great empires were razed to the ground. New countries, eager to devour the scraps left behind, sprung up from the ashes. Civilian blood was on the doorstep of every parliament house. And the world was slowly coming to an end.

The great United States was being crushed under the pressure of Japan and Russia. Russia was in turn having supplies cut off by Britain and France. Britain and France verged on the edge of economic collapse having spent far too much on their armies. The United States armies were busy attacking Japan (rather successfully). The remaining countries were subject to constant warfare as the governments of the world fought for control, for wealth, for power.

It wasn’t supposed to last this long, they said. Prime Ministers and Presidents and other important people all promised peace treaties which disappeared like their armies. “It will end soon”, they said. “Before you know it, we’ll have won the war. Freedom!”

Dancing in the Dark

Chapter 1

The fire splutters as I fan my hand over the coals with an audible crack, its last breath.

A small voice behind me desperately cries, "No, the story wasn't finished!" as I am snapped out of my trance-like storytelling state by the sudden onset of black.

Everything seems different at night. More... sharp. The complicated colours of the daytime are converted into monotones of varying look - some soft, some harsh, but never out-of-place, and the light blue of the day sky morphs into a beautiful display of lights, contrasting beautifully on a dark background.

Redi Kholin the Second looked down on his kingdom proudly, from the skytree he had built.

It had taken years, decades even, of hard, painful work, sacrificing diplomacy for the trusty blade, but finally it had succeeded. The culmination of what the Almighty and his kin had started. The unity of the twelve kingdoms of Alkabar, and finally stability and peace for a land as prosperous as it.

From his skytree he could only just glimpse the border of his city, Kholinar, the capital of Alkabar and a magnificent manifestation of his work for all to enjoy. Kholinar was a metropolis which was already rumoured to be one of the safest in all of Raditar. Redi's hospitals accepted anybody, regardless of social status. His schools would turn away no man or woman, foe or friend. His government would preserve the very essence of stability, peace and fairness, governed by him with a deciding council to represent the needs of the noblemen. And Redi Kholin's barracks would train the Skah like no Skah had been trained before,

a short story about pain, about suffering, and about memories

Memories are the worst. When you desperately need happiness and contentment… all you have are memories. Memories of gone days. Memories of emotions and expressions you never will feel again. Memories which only poke fresh wounds, which only serve to tell you 'haha, you screwed up, what a shame!' before leaving again. And when you lie in bed, shaking to the core, living only because you are too scared to die, memories can take you back to places of pain. To worlds you may have long escaped physically, but which still stay with you. To worlds which you will forever be cursed with living in, albeit only in your head. Memories are the worst.

The article sat on the table in front of the coffee table, only a small part of a larger newspaper. A spilt cup of coffee sat beside the extract, partially staining it brown and wrinkling it. And beside that was… what was it again? It had been so long… Oh yes. A ring. 24-karat gold, carefully forged by expert blacksmiths for… a woman.
