Tech day notes for April 13

Personal Knowledge Banks (PKB)

  • Joplin
    • Access notes from any device
    • Add PDF, audio files, videos
    • Add graphs and math
    • Colaborate with a group or share with a link using Joplin Cloud
    • Save web pages as notes
    • Write notes in rich text or Markdown.
    • App for Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, and iOS.
    • Notes are saved as open formats, so you can move them to other services
    • Not accessible for screen reader users.
  • QownNotes
    • All notes are in plain text Markdown format, no vendor lock-in.
    • Uses services like Nextcloud to sync.
    • Uses native OS resources so doesn't take up much disk space.
    • Can be extended or changed with scripts.
    • Moderately accessible for screen reader users.
  • Loqseq
    • Outliner based on Markdown notes
    • Allows you to connect notes together with links
    • Allows you to organize tasks in order of urgency
    • Not accessible for screen reader users.
  • OrgMode
    • "Your life in plain text"
    • Can be used as an outliner, writing books and papers, a to-do system
    • Has an agenda view for showing to-do items for the day, week, or everything
    • Can combine with other Emacs packages, like Org-roam, for further abilities
    • Is accessible using Emacspeak for screen reader users
  • Obsidian
    • Powerful knowledge base on top of local Markdown files
    • Allows you to connect ideas
    • Has a graph view to visually show connected items
    • Extendable with plugins
    • Not accessible for screen reader users
  • Roam Research
    • Good for research, tracking goals, and planning
  • Dendron
    • Fast note-taking tool that is fast even with a lot of notes
    • Quickly make daily journals with to-do items.
    • Allows you to build a knowledge-base
    • You can publish notes to the Internet as a digital garden
    • Works on Markdown files so is portable.
    • Works inside VS Code, a text editor
    • Is accessible for screen reader users.
