Slice Found Sound samples in Ableton Live

Slice a long audio sample

  1. Load a sample into Simpler
    1. Open Ableton Live, turn on Push2
    2. Add Track > MIDI track > Collections > Favourites > _Found Sound > (Select a sample) > Load
  2. Choose a colour that's visible on Push2's screen
    1. Shift + (Track Name)
  3. Save the set in the SAMPLE CHOPPING folder
  4. Slice the sample
    1. MODE > Slicing
    2. SLICE BY > Manual
    3. PAD SLICING > On
    4. Repeatedly hit Pad 1 while adjusting the NUDGE, until you find a useful section (use the ribbon to temporarily change the pitch)
    5. Repeatedly hit Pad 2 while adjusting the NUDGE, until you find a useful section
    6. Repeat for consecutive pads in 2x 8x4 blocks, played from BL to TR (the flashing pad indicates the next empty pad)
    7. PAD SLICING > Off
  5. Remove a slice
    1. Delete + lit pad (note: pads will be reassigned which can be disorientating)
  6. Choose Playback option (Mono - 1 sound at a time; Poly - ?; Thru - play past end of slice until another slice is triggered
  7. Export slices to a drum rack for individual pitching etc
    1. Duplicate track (just in case)
    2. Playback option (Mono - 1 sound at a time; Poly - ?; Thru - play past end of slice until another slice is triggered - makes no difference when converted to drum rack
  8. Export drum rack samples as playable samples
    1. Select drum pad
    2. Convert > MIDI Track
