Afropunk

10-July Last week, I learned about the AFROPUNK FEST. While looking at the live acts page, I started counting and realized I've only ever heard of 5 of the 41 performers. 😕

In nerd-fashion, I set up a very long ToDo in Habitica with each act as a checklist item and the goal is to listen to 1-5 songs (minimum) by each act (even those I've heard of) by the time the festival starts (it's a convenient time-frame, I'm not actually going to the festival).

Legend:

  • 📅 Date I listened

Methodology:

  • As often as possible, I start with the 5 Popular tracks for each artist on Spotify
  • When Spotify turns out to be a dead-end, I'll hop over to YouTube

Hee, I'm a fan from the Tony! Toni! Toné! days, so, he's going to be the easiest listening in the bunch for me. 🙂

Verdict: I really dig "Come Down" and I don't actively dislike anything I heard, so I guess I'm… neutral.

Gary Clark, Jr. 🤙🏽

I mean, I'm claiming familiarity, but I don't think I've ever deliberately listened to his music before. I know his name, that's about it.

  2. "Bright Lights"
  3. "Don't Owe You A Thang"
  4. "Take Me Down"
  5. "Catfish Blues - Live"

Thoughts: I dig that live version of "Things Are Changin'" and the guitars in "Bright Lights" are like a siren song. By the time "Don't Owe You A Thang" started, I began to suspect Mr Clark puts on one hell of a show.

Verdict: purchased "Blak and Blu" with "Gary Clark, Jr. Live" on deck (sometimes imprinting on live versions of songs ruins the studio version for me, heh; see the Unplugged version of "Layla", I mean…)

Michael Kiwanuka 🔎

Thoughts: On "Home Again", he reminds me of Ben Harper a little bit.

Verdict: 👍 but not moved enough to pick up singles 15 days later it just shows to go ya, context is important. At a friend's place over the weekend, Kiwanuka's "Love & Hate" came on over the sound system and some combination of the company, sunset, and bubbles had me getting Shazam out like I'd never heard the song before. Ha!

Thoughts: I still love "Back To Life", sigh.

Verdict: the samples, the beats, still so enjoyably '90s.
