Criteria for admission to membership
Recommendations from Education and Standards Sub Committee
To use the same four criteria and process for admission of Members as was used for admission of Fellows but with
suitable rewording to reflect evidence of local experience rather than national or international.
Recommended wording for the criteria:

1. Demonstration of experiential exposure to clinical informatics in the workplace, through direct care, research,
development, education, leadership or policy
2. Demonstration of significant contributions to the advancement of clinical informatics in the candidate’s immediate
locality, or in the UK, or internationally
3. Demonstration of recognised leadership in the field, either in the candidate’s locality or nationally
4. Demonstrable commitment to the advancement of clinical informatics in the UK
In contrast to the criteria for Fellowship, expectations should be realistic for a candidate who is in the early stages
of developing a career in clinical informatics. The aim should simply be to establish that the candidate has provided
sufficient evidence of the application of clinical informatics knowledge and skills to demonstrate a lasting commitment
to clinical informatics. These criteria should be applied flexibly and the selection panel and its chair should ensure
that each case is considered on its own merit.
These criteria should be considered as temporary. The Faculty should expedite the development of core competencies so
that as soon as possible it will be able to introduce a competency based assessment.
The Faculty should provide guidance relating to the completion of application forms to candidates, based on experience
gained in the two Fellowship rounds.
