####Towards a pedagogy for the Digital Humanities

  • curriculum design
  • innovative pedagogies
  • student transitions
  • staff transitions

####Visions of the future

**Prescott provocation...

DH often conservative - dominated by the canon, dead white European males; recreates editorial methods of print.

DH considers itself only concerned with advanced research ... PGs and better.

Research respectable part. Pedagogy dropped out of mainstream of DH.

Though this is changing... HASTAC.

We don't just want a digital studies, we want digital methods that change research.

**Stommel provocation...

Everything should decay, reinvent itself.

As the humanities decays we have a chance to work out what bits of it we want to keep.

VISION: create an artefact which represents your group vision for the future?

PRINCIPLES: what principles for learning and teaching inform your vision?

PRACTICES: what would you get your students to do?

VISION

  • All of most humanities students to have a common set of methods and techniques that they could use within their chosen discipline.
  • Option of learning by doing.
  • Show them what is possible.
  • New habits.
  • Collaboration.
  • Joy.
  • Students capable of evaluating all possible methods (not just reading, synthesising, writing...) when approaching a problem.
  • Appreciation of contributions to knowledge that digital technologies have made.
  • Environment that encourages formal and informal learning around a broad range of skills (again, not just reading, synthesising, writing).
  • core set of skills

PRINCIPLES

  • don't sacrifice the distinctiveness of the discipline to the technology.
  • accommodate skills backgrounds.
  • even spread of methods.
  • revelling in difference.

PRACTICES

  • shifting sand.

  • Open Mindedness to Different / Multiple Ways to Solve a Problem

###Thursday

####Narrowing the Focus

Critical skills critical.

Challenge of DH folks wearing many hats - technical experts in one community, novices in another.

Unbundling all the bits of DH.

Vision where digital becomes invisible.

Learning in public.

Importance of fringes to connect with new communities.

If the sand becomes concrete, if you create DH, you change H.

Need to be bold and place emphasis on institutions to support our practice.

####Priority setting

Idea to think about concretising ideas we've been discussing around thinking, making, doing, dreaming

####Next Steps

Recommendations for HEA to take forward:

  • more blended, flexible, multi-discplinary and multi-institution approaches to learning.
  • making open, social, networked learners
  • some specialist teaching on certain digital skills will be needed, especially at PG level.
  • (but) dh ideally shouldn't be taught in a vacuum, should be fitted in with exisiting work.
  • recognise how digital staff already are.
