Alley
Space between two columns of text. Often confused with gutter, but there’s so much confusion on both definitions they can be used interchangeably.
Boost
Large picture (usually top priority) promoting a click-through to a feature, story, or content
Byline
Author’s name at the beginning of an article
Callout
Labels that diagram parts of an illustration
Cross Head
A few words used to break up large amounts of text. Typically used for quotables from interviews.
Cutline
Caption for an image or illustration.
CVI
Center of visual interest
Deck
Short, introductory paragraph up top that summarizes an article. Usually set in a type size larger than the body, but smaller than the headline. Also called a Standfirst.
Downrule
Vertical line between two text columns
Gutter
Synonym for Alley.
Jump
_Continued on p. ____…, or any copy that indicates a break or click-through to continue
Kicker
The first sentence or first few words of an article, set larger or styled differently from the rest of the copy. Slightly different from a deck or standfirst in that it’s not a summary, and isn’t separated from the rest of the paragraph.
Overline
Introductory or explanatory sub-heading, set on top of a main heading
Splash
Main front page story
Standfirst
Synonym for Deck.
Strapline
Synonym for Tagline.
Talkie Headline
A quote from one of the people in the story, used as a headline
Tagline
A “catch phrase,” or memorable sentence quip that mostly captures the overall feeling. This is the sub-line on movie posters, or the sub-line of a publication title. Sometimes called a strapline.
