StS: The Shopkeeper Boss Fight

The Shopkeeper (Boss Fight)

  • The first time you defeat the Shopkeeper, you gain the relic Comfy Rug (Reduce
  • Big Attack animation is his hand coming down from the top of the screen to smoosh you.
  • All his actions get his sfx and banter.
  • Innate Relic Buffs:
    • Starts combat with the buffs from every relic that was for sale in the shop you just entered. (Relics that do things with cards are mapped onto comparable effects for an enemy.)
    • Starts with the buffs from every shop relic you haven't already seen in a shop (or purchased).
      • Normal Effects: Clockwork Souvenir, Hand Drill, Sling of Courage, Lee's Waffle
      • Chem X -- Increase the Shopkeeper's gain of Toolbox stacks by +2 whenever any would be gained (both from the starting Toolbox and the Transmute action).
      • Toolbox -- Starts with 3 stacks of Toolbox, which triggers a random effect each turn when it ticks down:
        • Dramatic Entrance -- Deals 6 damage to you.
        • Blind -- Applies 2 Weak to you.
        • Trip -- Applies 2 Vulnerable to you.
        • Bandage Up -- Heals the Shopkeeper for 6 hp.
        • Panic Button -- Gain 30 block. (Cannot happen twice in a row.)
      • Orange Pellets -- His Buff-Defend-Attack action clears his debuffs.
      • Medical Kit -- Enables his First Aid attack, periodically clearing the debuffs Weak, Vulnerable, Poison, Strength-Down, Bulls-Eye, Marked.
      • The Abacus -- Shopkeeper gains Metallicize 6 (Plated Armor 6?) whenever you shuffle your deck.
      • Membership Card -- The Shopkeeper takes half damage from gold-based attacks.
      • Strange Spoon -- 50% chance any Curse or Status card that would be exhausted is instead discarded.
      • Frozen Eye -- Times his attacks for turns where you will draw mostly attacks.
      • Orrery -- Adds a Dazed to your discard every 5 cards you play.
      • Dolly's Mirror -- When you play a particular card, the Shopkeeper will use his current attack twice.
      • Prismatic Shard --
      • Cauldron: Adds 5 additional random Potions to his Potion Belt (below).
  • Potion Belt: Starts with 3 stacks of Potions (Cauldron icon), representing modified versions of the potions that were for sale in the shop you just entered.
  • Open 24/7: Clicking on the Shopkeeper still opens the shop. You can buy cards--though nothing is on sale and you gain no benefit from price reduction relics. All relics and potions are locked (greyed out), as well as the Card Removal service.
    • Making any purchase spawns a new Maw Bank minion (with reset Max HP) if any are dead.
    • Making any purchase still breaks your own Maw Bank relic (see below).
    • Having the Courier still restocks purchases.
    • Having Smiling Mask unlocks card removal.

Normal Actions

The Shopkeeper's normal actions are:

  • Pointing Hand (Attack) -- His giant pointing hand pokes you for damage.
  • Transmute (Attack) -- Attack for and add 2 stacks of Toolbox.
  • Use Potion (Buff) -- Uses a charge of his Potion Belt to gain the effects from one of his listed potions. (Bouncing Flask vfx bounces from him to him once.)
  • Gold Drop -- Attack for X damage T times. (Gold gain vfx from Wish)
    • X = (gold you've gained this run)/10
    • T = 1 + max(0, 20 - (# of shop purchases))
  • Hand of Greed -- Deals 25 damage and takes all your gold. (Pointing Hand vfx, along with the raining gold vfx.)

Fight Structure

The Shopkeeper changes phase with each 25% of his HP depleted. Phase changes are marked by a unique action that can be countered/nullified by having the appropriate Shop-themed relic. (Common: Smiling Mask, Maw Bank, Meal Ticket; Uncommon: The Courier; Rare: Old Coin)

  • At Start: Maw Bank (100%) — At start, the Shopkeeper will summon two Maw Banks (minions with very low HP): they attack each turn (for 12 damage), mugging 12 gold/attack. All living minions as well as the Shopkeeper then gain Max HP equal to the gold stolen.
    • Having a used Maw Bank relic sets the max Maw Bank minions to 1.
    • Having an unused Maw Bank relic instantly deals damage to all enemies equal to your gold whenever a Maw Bank spawns.
  1. Phase 1 (100%-76%) — Smiling Mask — For each time you've purchased the Card Removal Service this run, the Shopkeeper will show a "???" intent and use his Bargaining attack, offering you a choice between adding a card to your deck -- a Curse (Greed), a Strike, a Defend -- or triggering a minigame event. The minigame option is randomly selected from the following (though you are aware of which one you're being offered when you Bargain):
    • Match and Keep with the cards 2x Greed, Hand of Greed, and Shiv, plus entries representing Gain 100 Gold and a Potion of Card Removal.
    • Wheel of Change but with Greed replacing Decay as the Curse, and the relic reward always being the Shop Relic that was present in the shop.
    • Knowing Skull but the first Potion is always a Smoke Bomb and the first Colorless card is always Forethought. (Both choices play the Shopkeeper laugh sfx.) Additionally purchased Potions come from the shop's starting pool and subtract from Shopkeeper's Potion Belt.
  2. With the Mask, the Shopkeeper will not add the Curse Greed to your deck. He instead skips his turn and spits out some dialog ("I like your haircut") and skips his turn.
  3. The Courier (75%) — At 75%, the Shopkeeper will summon two Courier minions, who will steal your potions and rares (like Bronzie's Orbs). Killing them gets back the stolen goods.
    • Note that Maw Banks can still be spawned here, who in turn would start thieving and buffing Courier Max HP.
    • If you have the Courier relic, it will be flashing. Buying any item from the store instantly sends a Courier minion scurrying away to restock it (returning your stolen goods). The minion does not return (however you probably just respawned a Maw Bank.)
  4. Phase 2 (75%-51%) — The Shopkeeper now begins drinking from his Potion Belt every other turn until he runs out (tho he will skip potion activations that would have no benefit). Once he runs out of his own potions, he will drink the ones the Couriers have stolen if you haven't gotten them back.
  5. (50%) Meal Ticket — At ≤50%, the Shopkeeper will heal back to 50% HP and shrug off all his debuffs. If you have the Meal Ticket relic, he will also generously do the same for you. (You were also healed 12hp at the start of the event, when you entered the store.)
  6. Phase 3 (49%-26%) —
  7. (25%) Old Coin — Crossing 25% triggers the Shopkeeper's Hand of Greed attack the next turn, a massive single hit that also robs you of all gold. This attack will be signified by a dialog quip ("Take your time; or don't"??), and a unique enemy intent using the Old Coin icon. Should you having the Old Coin relic when this intent appears, the relic flashes, and at the start of your turn, a coin-shaped shield animation grants you a buff that fully negates the Hand of Greed attack.
  8. Phase Four (25%-0%) — The Shopkeeper alternates between hiding under his rug after being hit -- gaining Intangible every other turn like Nemesis -- and using Pointing Hand.
