My OS preferences

My personal OS preferences

I am an Android only guy, and prefer Macs, but is is very close and I can literally use any computer you throw at me.

Why I prefer Android:

Features iPhones don't have:

  • A goddamn file manager without the need of jailbreaking/root
  • You can download, upload, and often view any file
  • GBA emulators (screw you PoGo players, I'm playing FireRed!)
  • Real Firefox, not that lame Safari disguise.
  • Terminal access, again, no root required, but it is better with it
  • A goddamn Back button
  • A big ol' clock on the home screen.
  • Jailbroken iPhones still can't do as much as plain, unrooted, AOSP+Gapps Android.
  • Material Design. I am a sucker for it.
  • ROM development and updates are much easier and faster.
  • No computer each time you power on.
  • You can find root apps in the Play Store. No Cydia needed.
  • More versatile app selection
  • Varying icon shapes
  • Better organization. No "General" settings.
  • Notifications are better
  • Icons make more sense and are easy to see
  • Not everything is on your home screen AND scrolling app drawers.

Things iPhones do better:

  • Battery life is always better
  • Backspacing by word is awesome
  • You get official updates on time, and you often get the latest
  • Better gestures in pinch
  • No viruses
  • Siri is much better than GNow.

Why I prefer Macs

And why do I like Macs? While I can't afford most of them, I have one and love it. However, it is a close matchup.

Mac vs Windows and Linux:

  • It takes some serious effort to mess up a Mac. You can't do it by accident.
  • More consistent UI
  • Works out of the box
  • Scrolling and swipe gestures
  • Behold! The great and powerful Spotlight Search!
  • No apt-get. (Almost) no setup wizards. Just click on the installer and drag the app to the Applications folder.
  • Preview literally replaces 10 programs on Win/Linux

Mac vs Windows:

  • Updates are easy to install and are free.
  • No drivers.
  • Better Command line. Especially with Homebrew or MacPorts.
  • No poorly designed programs
  • Organized file system. You don't have stuff on the root of the file system.
  • Menus on top with standard menu items = Muscle memory
  • Screenshots don't suck. And, with a command in the Terminal, you can choose the path.
  • Right click menus look the same.
  • Finder has tabs.
  • Updates look the same on Macs. I can tell you what Windows version from a single screenshot.
  • Sorry, Win8-Win10, informal =/= easier to understand.
  • No need for antivirus that slows your PC to a crawl

Mac vs Linux:

  • While the terminal is very powerful, you aren't forced to use it and can be quite content without it.
  • No need to install tons of dependencies, no need to worry about accidentally uninstalling dependencies and finding yourself in the recovery console.
  • No QT vs GTK+ vs GTK3 conflicts
  • Latest Flash Player
  • No cryptic package names
  • No annoying duplicate apps
  • You don't have to worry about deb vs RPM, repositories or building from source.

What Windows does better:

  • Better program compatibility, but Mac with Wine and Homebrew/MacPorts comes close
  • Best taskbar.
  • Start Menu.
  • Best window management. Especially snapping.
  • Better for gaming
  • OneDrive integration beats iCloud.
  • Viewing a zip file without extracting the whole thing
  • And if Windows can't open the archive, 7-Zip can.
  • No Ctrl Click
  • MTP with Android.
  • Pasting full paths and URLs in file open dialogs
  • You don't have to worry about that 1TB hard drive being NTFS and unable to do anything.
  • Windows Explorer right click integration

What Linux does better:

  • You can run it on just about anything, from an old laptop to a new desktop to a Raspberry Pi.
  • Customize it as much as you want.
  • Themes
  • Desktop environments
  • Open source = more security, as long as you are up to date
  • Completely free
  • You can make it blazingly fast.
