"text": "
My wife Eleanor and I were walking up a mountain road, enjoying a rare moment of being alone together. As we rounded a bend, we saw a friend, Nancy,* not too far ahead. When we caught up with her she suggested we walk together.
\n\n
I've known Nancy for 35 years. We're close friends and both Eleanor and I love spending time with her. But, in that moment, we didn't want to walk with her. We wanted time to ourselves.
\n\n
We also didn't want to slow to her pace. Which is the excuse we used, explaining that I wanted to keep my heart rate in an aerobic zone. It was true and, somehow, felt less offensive than saying we wanted to be alone.
\n\n
But when we met her on the way down and she offered to descend with us, our exercise excuse didn't hold up since pace wasn't an issue going downhill. Still, we reasserted the excuse, and started hopping and skipping to keep our heart rates, and appearances, up.
\n\n
We failed on both counts. We couldn't skip downhill fast enough to keep our heart rates up and she knew it was an excuse. She was left feeling we were avoiding her and we left feeling dishonest.
\n\n
Why didn't we just tell her we wanted to spend some time alone? She surely would have understood.
\n\n
The easy answer is that we were trying to preserve her feelings. But the real answer is that we were trying to preserve our own. We didn't want to feel mean or rude. And the real, real answer is that we didn't want to feel her judgment or disapproval of us for being mean or rude. Which, of course, backfired.
\n\n
After that encounter, I did some soul searching. How often do I say things that aren't completely true in order to make someone — usually myself — feel better? How often do I subtly — or at least I think subtly — position things so they appear in a better light?
\n\n
Unfortunately, the answer is often. And I see this in organizations all the time. We position messages to gain buy-in. We present things in a light that we think will make it easier for others to accept. Maybe we don't outright lie, but we gently massage the truth to make it more acceptable, more likely to be embraced.
\n\n
And then, like Eleanor and me on our walk, we expend a tremendous amount of energy to keep up a ruse that fools no one.
\n\n
People know the truth. They can sense it. And even if they are momentarily fooled, they won't be for long because other people won't be fooled and they'll all talk. If not in person, then on Facebook or Linkedin or Twitter or some Google group.
\n\n
Even though we know that, we still try to make things seem different than they are because it takes great courage to be honest. You have to be willing to make yourself vulnerable.
\n\n
Here's the crazy thing: honesty is much more compelling, powerful, and effective than the alternative. People want the truth. They are willing to accept it far more often than we think. And they respect other people and organizations for speaking it.
\n\n
But what if the truth is that you're a leader who isn't sure what to do in a given situation? Do people really want to know that?
\n\n
One of my clients, a large financial services firm, wanted to understand what differentiated successful new managers from unsuccessful ones. So they surveyed the direct reports of new managers with MBA degrees. The number one behavior that distinguished the best managers? Asking for help from their employees.
\n\n
So, yes. People want you to be honest with them, even if you're a leader and honesty means exposing yourself as a little intimidated, or shy, or unsure. That kind of vulnerability doesn't alienate; it attracts. It makes us approachable. It allows people to identify with us, to trust us, and to follow us.
\n\n
The day after our walk, Eleanor and I saw Nancy and told her the truth. That yes, we wanted to keep our heart rates up, but mostly we just wanted to reconnect with each other, alone.
\n\n
Nancy laughed and said that she had guessed that and of course she understood. We all breathed a sigh of relief.
\n\n
*Names and some details changed
\n
\n \n
\n \n
",

Then when people really started using it I set up EC2 for fail-over, and now EC2 is our primary host. We still use these basement servers for a variety of things, however.

Before DuckDuckGo, I operated in a pre-cloud world and had been running my own servers for a number of years. My last company co-located (stored our servers in a data center), which had worked well except for when things went wrong and a reboot didn't solve it. Then I'd have to (usually at inopportune times) drive over to the data center, be escorted in, mess with things, and be charged a lot for doing so.

The main problem with self-hosting (vs co-lo) in my mind had always been crappy Internet. Then in 2006 I moved to our house in a town that approved FIOS a few months later. I had been watching it progress, and we were literally the first person in the area to install it.

I was hopeful and it turned out correct that the crappy Internet problem had been solved. In five years, it has never been fully out except for the time our service got suspended for lack of payment (forgot to update my expired card). Other than that, there is just the usual blip always coincidental with some internal Internet routing thing. In fact, since I have complete network control, the \"co-lo\" doesn't reboot routers for scheduled maintenance either. The latency is also pretty good.

Note that I'm not advising any of this -- simply telling my story. So why did I do this? Really it was the path of least resistance given my history and experience. I was used to setting up and maintaining servers, and had some laying around. This setup seemed great at the time -- I'd get the benefits of co-location (good Internet) but could mess with things at will. (The other co-lo benefit is power -- I have that covered as well.)

I still like the idea of having a server for non-production use, e.g. this Web site. There is something nice about having it close by. Perhaps it is a false sense, but I feel that the setup is more reliable than any cloud provider. And I get to feel a bit more full stack.

But all that pretty much stops at one server for me. Anything beyond that and it quickly becomes a PITA. Here's a pic from when we bought the rack off of Craigslist:

\n \n
\n \n
",

"text": "Software development is not the easiest vocation for getting or staying in shape. For that matter, being part-owner of a relatively young business isn't either.

I've been steadily putting on weight and getting in worse shape since before the dot com boom. Since we started MartianCraft, I've had very few days off, and my average work day has been probably twelve hours, possibly longer. Every time I try and get into a routine of exercising, something happens: a client emergency, a deadline, a build, a new prospective client, a minor family emergency. When there's not enough hours in the day (and there never are), the exercise was always the first thing to get cut.

Recently, I came across this brilliantly simple idea from a Mayo Clinic cardiologist. It's called the Treadmill Desk. Essentially, you replace your chair with a treadmill, and instead of trying to get a good strenuous calorie-burning bout of exercise in a few times a week, you just walk while you're working. You don't walk fast; in fact, you go quite slow. They typically recommend that you walk between one and two miles per hour, which is about half of most people's normal walking speed. This speed allows you to function fairly normally. After just a few minutes, you can type and mouse normally. If it gets hard to type, you back off on the speed a little. It's not a race. It's not even exercise in the traditional sense.

I'm typing this blog post while walking on a treadmill.

The goal with this walking is not to break a sweat, but rather to just be in constant motion. You will want your office a touch cooler than normal, though, as even slow walking does raise your body temperature. Despite the low-key nature of the movement, a typical person burns an additional 100 - 130 calories per hour they're at their desk. For a typical person working an eight hour day, that's between 800 and 1040 calories per day. If you work longer hours or weigh more than the average person, it's even more calories. Now, think about that. You have to burn approximately 3500 calories to lose a pound of weight, so assuming you don't increase your caloric intake, that's about a pound every three to four days of work, or two pounds a week. For someone working a forty hour week, that's about five pounds a month, or sixty pounds a year without additional exercise or dieting. There's a lot of health benefits that go along with losing extra weight, also. Lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol, lower incidence of several types of cancer.

If you work more than forty hours a week, the benefits can be even greater, assuming you don't eat more to make up for the extra calories you burn.

I've talked to a number of people who are using treadmill desks, and the feedback was universally positive. Everybody lost weight – several of them a considerable amount – and all were in better health than when they started. And almost everyone said the following word-for-word phrase to me: \"I would never go back to a normal desk\".

After about the third person gave me the same basic story, I was sold. Sign me up! I can do this.

But there was a problem.

There are lots of plans for treadmill desks around the Internet and you can actually buy treadmill desks now. But, here's the thing: My primary machine is a Mac Pro with two 27\" ACD monitors along with a crap-ton of accessories. I couldn't find any desk for under $5,000 that looked sturdy enough to safely and securely hold the weight of all my gear, and all the plans I found for building one seemed to assume the use of a laptop or small computer with small monitor.

Because of that big sheet of glass, Apple's monitors are heavy. Because of that big aluminum case, the Mac Pro is also very heavy. My computer and monitors alone weigh well over a hundred pounds, and I wasn't about to trust that much weight worth that much money to something that looked flimsy or was designed to hold a laptop.

I experimented for a week using a makeshift treadmill desk with my MacBook Air, and I found the walking and working quite easy to do, but also found myself constantly pining to move back to my desk to use my more powerful machine and bigger monitors. I usually abandoned the treadmill after about two hours when I'd start getting into more hardcore coding, not because of the treadmill, but because of the computer.

But, that week was enough to convince me that this was a good way to reverse the slow but persistent upward trend in my weight that's marked the last several years of my life. Unfortunately, it also convinced me that I could only make it work if I could find a way to use my computer while walking.

So, I decided to build my own desk. Building a sturdy desk this tall (over four feet tall in my case, since I'm 6'3\" and will be standing on a treadmill desk that's about 6\" high) turned out to be an interesting, but not-entirely-trivial engineering exercise. It took a couple of re-designs and a lot of swearing, but my desk is now done and I've been happily using it for a couple of days now.

Here's my rig on my desk (excuse the messy office):

(Yes, there's a beer bottle in the background. That was my reward for finishing the desk.)

After I've been using it for longer and am convinced the design is good, I'll share how I made the desk for anyone who might wish to build one for themselves.

So far, so good, though. The desk seems to be solid, has no perceptible wobble, and the monitors and computer don't seem to be putting any noticeable strain on it. Yesterday, I walked nearly nine miles at an average of 1.6 mile per hour and had a productive work day. Today's about half over and I've burned a little over 600 calories while fixing two pretty gnarly bugs in client apps. These two days have been enough to convince me that this is going to work.

By having my good computer on the treadmill desk and my MacBook Air at my regular desk, there's a built-in incentive for me to walk, or at least stand, rather than sit at my desk. I'm simply more productive when I have more screen real estate and a more powerful computer.

In a week or so, I'll put together a parts list and basic instructions, but the design is pretty basic. 1¼\" galvanized pipe makes up the main frame of the desk with ⅛\" wire rope and turnbuckles as guy wires to provide additional lateral stability.

This is the treadmill I use:

It's designed only for walking, will hold up to 400 pounds, and it's shorter than most treadmills, so it takes up less room. It's not cheap, but it's fairly reasonable for a treadmill at $400, and it can fold up out of the way if you need to. I've been very happy with it so far. While it's not whisper quiet, it's nowhere near as loud as most treadmills I've used, and it has a full set of controls on the handle where you can reach them easily while using it as part of a treadmill desk, which is much nicer than having to awkwardly reach over the desk to the treadmill's console.

The desk plans (when I post them them) are intended to work with this treadmill, you will probably need to make minor adjustments to use it with other models, as well as account for any height difference.

©2008-2010 Jeff LaMarche.
\nhttp://iphonedevelopment.blogspot.com

",

Because of a handful of high profile, baby-faced billionaires, there may be a perception that the very young are best positioned to be founders, but research shows the average age of successful entrepreneurs is actually about 40 and getting older. Why? Running a business well takes a broad range of skills that, for the vast majority of us, take years to master.

The obvious takeaway for aspiring young business owners is to get learning, but how? Trying and failing at starter businesses is one way, so is going back to school for an expensive degree, but now there's another lower-cost option to learn useful stuff, courtesy of MIT. The world-class science and tech school just launched a certificate program that lets members of the public get a piece of an MIT education online for next to nothing.

The program, dubbed MITx, will launch in the spring of 2012, and will enable those looking to learn on the cheap to access a portfolio of MIT classes through an online interactive learning platform that lets users learn at their own pace. Initially, there will be only a limited number of classes available but the offerings are expected to expand over time. Several other universities, including Yale, also provide free online versions of their classes, but MITx will be the first to offer online students a formal certification of mastery. Using the courseware will be free but receiving a certification will involve a small charge.

\"I think for someone to feel they're earning something, they ought to pay something, but the point is to make it extremely affordable. The most important thing is that it'll be a certificate that will clearly state that a body sanctioned by M.I.T. says you have gained mastery,\" said L. Rafael Reif, the provost, in a conference call announcing the news.

\"There are many people who would love to augment their education by having access to M.I.T. content, people who are very capable to earn a certificate from M.I.T.,\" Reif continued.

Are you one of those people? There are plenty of tutorials on Git already. How is this one\ndifferent?
\n\n
A Story
\n\n
When I first started using Git, I read plenty of tutorials, as well as the\nuser manual. Though I picked up the basic usage patterns and commands, I never\nfelt like I grasped what was going on “under the hood,” so to speak.\nFrequently this resulted in cryptic error messages, caused by my random guessing\nat the right command to use at a given time. These difficulties worsened as I\nbegan to need more advanced (and less well documented) features.
\n\n
After a few months, I started to understand those under-the-hood concepts.\nOnce I did, suddenly everything made sense. I could understand the manual pages\nand perform all sorts of source control tasks. Everything that seemed so cryptic\nand obscure now was perfectly clear.
\n\n
Understanding Git
\n\n
The conclusion I draw from this is that you can only really use Git if you\nunderstand how Git works. Merely memorizing which commands you should run at\nwhat times will work in the short run, but it’s only a matter of time\nbefore you get stuck or, worse, break something.
\n\n
Half of the existing resources on Git, unfortunately, take just that\napproach: they walk you through which commands to run when, and expect that you\nshould do fine if you just mimic those commands. The other half does go through\nall the concepts, but from what I have seen, they explain Git in a manner that\nassumes you already understand how Git works.

This tutorial, then, will take a conceptual approach to Git. My goal\nwill be, first and foremost, to explain the Git universe and its objectives, and\nsecondarily to illustrate how to use Git commands to manipulate that\nuniverse.
\n\n

I will begin by describing the Git data model, the repository.
\n
From there I will describe the various operations Git provides for\nmanipulating the repository, starting from the simplest (adding data to a\nrepository) and moving through the more complex operations of branching and\nmerging.
\n
I will then discuss how to use Git in a collaborative setting.
\n
Finally I will look at the Git rebase function, which provides an\nalternative to merging, and consider its pros and cons.
\n

Go on to the next page: Repositories
\n\n

",

No doubt, there will be stiff competition: Nearly one in four young professionals wants to work at Google, for instance, but there’s more room in the Googleplex for software developers. Facebook gets 250,000 applications a year and sifts through them to find the cream of the crop, preferring those who build things, whether they’re apps or organizations. And Apple wants, well, Apple fanboys to help create the next generation of gadgetry, but you ought to have a reference from an existing Appler.
\n
The tech field is booming, and the industry needs bright young talent to keep innovating. Some facts:
\n
\n
An IT manager can make more than $110,000 a year
\n
Android app developers are especially coveted
\n
Data mining and statistical analysis are ideal collegiate specializations
\n
\n
So, if you’re like most other young professionals and are looking to nab a job at any of those three companies, take a gander at the infographic below. There are tips on how to optimize your resume, how to land an interview and how to impress the HR team. If you’ve landed a job at any of these companies, feel free to offer tips and insights in the comments below.
\n

\n\n\n

\n

\n
\n
Social Media Job Listings
\n
\n
Every week we post a list of social media and web job opportunities.
