Cloud Categories Corresponding Cloud Types Altitude Appearance and Characteristics
Clear Sky Generally denotes an absence of clouds N/A No clouds visible, allowing direct view of the sky.
Patterned Clouds Altocumulus, Stratocumulus Middle to low Clouds in patchy, wave-like, or honeycomb patterns. Altocumulus: white or gray patches; Stratocumulus: large, rounded masses with breaks between cloud masses.
Thick Dark Clouds Nimbostratus, Cumulonimbus Low to multi-level Nimbostratus: thick, dark gray clouds covering the sky, often with continuous precipitation. Cumulonimbus: towering clouds with anvil-shaped tops, associated with thunderstorms and heavy precipitation.
Thick White Clouds Cumulus, Stratocumulus Low to middle Cumulus: puffy, white or light gray clouds with a flat base. Stratocumulus: large, dark rounded masses or rolls, often covering the entire sky with breaks or gaps between cloud masses.
Veil Clouds Cirrostratus High Thin and wispy clouds covering the sky, creating a veil-like appearance. Cirrostratus: high-level clouds composed of ice crystals, sometimes producing halo phenomena around the sun or moon.
