Instructions on how to make your very own social media sharing NFC tag!

Guide on how to make your own Digital Business Card NFC Tag

You may have seen products like popl popping up over the last few years, they're classy, sophisticated and impressive, but in reality these products are not doing anything earth shattering. You can very easily make multiple of your own for less than 10$ total.

What you'll need

  1. NTAG216 as either Stickers, Fobs, Cards. Dealers choice you can find these on amazon for very cheap*
  2. A Phone capable of reading and writing nfc (most modern smart phones are capable of this but check first)
  3. The NFCTools app. Android link | Apple link
  4. A Free social media sharing platform such as linktree or Carrd

*Does not specifically need to be NTAG216 but it is a safe bet for interoperability and simplicity.

How to make your contact sharing tag

  1. First spend as much time as you like designing your website on the afformentioned free services.
  2. Make sure when publishing your site you copy down the URL (website link) as you'll need it shortly.
  3. Open NFC Tools and tap read. put your tag to the nfc reader on your phone to confirm the tag is working.
  4. Back out of that menu and head on over to WRITE
  5. Tap Add a Record > Custom URL/URI > paste your freshly made social media sharing site into the box and click ok.

You should now see something similar to the image below:

  1. Tap Write / [x] Bytes and approach the NFC Tag.
  2. You should see a success message indicating the link has now been written to the tag.
  3. You should now be able to scan your NFC Tag with yours/others phones to open up the social media sharing page you created

And that's it. Thats all these digital business cards are is a link on a simple and cheap NFC Tag.

General Advice

  • Do not stick an NFC Sticker to a metal surface without buying/creating metal protected tags. placing a normal NFC Sticker/tag on metal will cause it to not work. So don't stick it to the back of your all metal phone :)
  • If you are worried someone may overwrite your data, you can use the "Other" options in NFCTools to lock your tag with a password. Be warned that if you forget this password it is not recoverable and the nfctag will be stuck with whatever you wrote to it
