Mod 3 Week 1

1. Refine your career vision: What are the values that will drive your job search? What are your goals for your job search? What kind of role do you see yourself pursuing in your job search? Based on your latest version of your career vision, list the top 3-5 industries and companies you’ll pursue in your job search as of right now. Why did you pick these industries/companies? How do they relate to the values and goals you have for yourself in your job search?

  • The values that will drive my job search will be an empahsis on community, collaboration, and growth. I want to work for a company that encourages personal and collaborative growth while improving the community they serve. My goals are to find companies that value the same ideas. I don't believe that will too hard to find. My role will most likely be a junior level developer that will work on a team. This is what I prefer at the beginning of my career so I can expand my growth and learn in a collaborative environment. The three companies I have done research on and look promising are Cuttlesoft, Sciencesoft, and Slalom.
  • I chose Cuttlesoft because of their focus on collaboration and an friendly/diverse community. They really seem to care about their employees.
  • I chose Sciencesoft because of their desire to create software that helps education. Being a former teacher, i still want to be apart of the educational world.
  • I chose Slalom because I have a friend that works there and he talks about how good the company is. He has been there about 5 years and knowing him, staying that long means the company takes care of their employees. All of these in some way match with my values/goals. Whether that be education, collaboration, or an inclusive community to work in.

2. Build your resume

What will you emphasize in your resume that directly relates to your targeted industries

  • I plan on emphasising my collaborative work as a teacher and as a project partner during Turing.
  • I also plan on highlighting my own personal growth through the program and how the work I have done has positively impacted the community utilizing what I've made.

  • I need to update the keywords used in my resume
  • See if I can add another project to my resume so that I can more easily highlight my limited experience

4. Set up your Turing Alumni Portfolio: Log in with the link you got in your email. Going forward, log in at alumni.turing.io/user Fill out all fields Select “publish” before saving (projects must also have “published” selected) Reflection questions: What do you want this portfolio to say about you?

  • I want the portfolio to display my desire to be a part of a team and work hard to build something for a community.

_How will you continue to add to this to portray your story and showcase the kind of work that demonstrates your brand?_

  • I need to update my 'About Me' section to better protray my story. I want to figure out a way to better describe the kind of work I want to do. I struggle with talking about myself so it is difficult to accurately describe what I can bring to the table.

Ian’s workshop this week is designed to help you break down your interest in specific industries even further by exploring their tech stacks to decide if you want to utilize any of their tools in upcoming projects. Make a copy of his template here and post a link to your copy here to show what research you’ve completed. You can also link this research to your Huntr board.
