Letter to Representatives for Supporting the USPS!

You can look up the contact information for your Representatives and Senators here. If sending your correspondence by post, I'd recommend addressing your letter to the office in your area, not those in D.C.

Dear Representative/Senator Name:

Free and open elections are central to the idea of American democracy. In these unprecedented times, it is more important than ever before to take active measures to ensure that every U.S. Citizen who is eligible is provided with safe and accesible means of voting in the general election this November. Part and parcel to this is ensuring the continued function of the United States Postal Service (USPS) as it prepares for the largest influx of absentee ballots in our nation’s history.

I have become increasingly concerned about the growing body of evidence in the news regarding the transparent dismantling of the USPS through both administrative and fiscal means. I am disappointed at the actions taken under the current Administration and Postmaster General DeJoy to remove letter collection boxes and automated sorting machines from our communities and to forbid postal employees from work- ing overtime; according to the USPS, these actions are all but guranteed to introduce the danger of mail-in ballots being delayed—or not delivered at all—come November.

I am also disappointed at the lack of Congressional approval of the necessary $25 billion in federal grant funding that the USPS requires to continue operating through the fall. The $10 billion in Treasury loans approved in the CARES Act is simply insufficient to ensure the integrity of our elections or that the USPS is able to continue delivering essential supplies across the country.

As your constituent and a member of our community, I am writing to voice my concern that this reckless endangerment of the USPS is an existential threat to our community and the functioning of the American republic as a whole.

I am disappointed that you voted against H.R. 6800 (the HEROES Act) this May, which guarantees the emergency federal grant funding the USPS requires. I call upon you to vote for legislation that guarantees necessary funding for the USPS, and to voice your support for the COVID-19 relief package in the Senate that would ensure this funding. I furthermore call upon you to do everyting in your power to hold the current Administration accountable for its transparent bad-faith acts against the USPS and ensure a free and fair election, which is in the best interests of your constituents and the American people.

I thank you for your consideration of this crucial matter. I call upon you to vote for legislation that guarantees necessary federal grant funding for the USPS, to voice your support for the HEROES Act and COVID-19 relief package in the Senate that would ensure this funding, and to ensure Majority Leader McConnell gives this key legislation fair, nonpartisan treatment. I furthermore call upon you to hold the current Administration accountable for its illegal bad-faith acts against the USPS and the integrity of our fair elections.
