Translation of "Pandora's Piñata" review
The most metalhead orchestra is back to surprise us all again. D:S:O, that in the last few years has
possibly won the title of most original metal band, is back with its new "Pandora's Piñata".The fact is
that this title has everything to do with the band, since its music is like a pandora's box that, when
opened, lets one discover new things, but always with a sence of humor that sometimes seems to be begging
for this scene, this fun that may give us a piñata in a party [not sure about this last sentence].
And the music of this swedish combo (that, with the addition of Mart Isaksson's trumpet and Daniel Hedin's
trombone, has certainly moved from a sextet to a 8 person combo) is exactly this: a party. A party that
flirts with many different styles, a party with a sense of humor and this childish feel that has
transformed into the identity of the swedish group. Something that made "Pandora's Piñata" a much expected
release for all the borderless minds.
As usual, D:S:O offer us a wide palette of rythms and melodies, but always with a metal base and lots of
Swing, without forgetting the voice of the mezzo-soprano Annlouice Loegdlund. In fact, one could say they
are a Swing orchestra, mostly because of the atmosphere created by the brass instruments, to which are
added violins, violas and the sound of Annlouice's voice mixed with also operatic male voices. The rythm
section, mostly the drums, can be heard throughout the whole album as a constant Metal flirtation with
which are also created the heaviest parts, especially when it is the rythm that dominates the theme.
As usual, this new work has managed to surprise, not because the band can intrigue you with its
unclassifiable sound, but because, like with "Sing Along Songs for the Damned and Delirious", they boldly
toyed with new elements. For example, "Voodoo Mon Amour" is very catchy and danceable, and, you know,
loaded with Swing. Also, parts like "How to Organize a Lynch Mob", with obvious influences of latin music
(the fact is that these kids have always enjoyed experimenting with the folk from around the world), and
like "Kevlar Sweetharts" seem sometimes stolen from a Tarantino movie, though they also have a few seconds
of oriental sounds. On the other hand, "Black Mox Messiah" [sic] has a certain industrial scent with a halo
that makes it look like taken from a "road movie"; like this also goes "Exit Strategy of a Wreacking Ball"
[sic] with a more metal sonority. "Aurora" is the most different, because one can consider it almost a
classical piece again dyed with oriental themes, something very distant from the bluesy "Hony Trap
Aftermath" or from "Mass Rapture", an almost epic piece that could be part of one of those majestic
soundtracks. "Of Kali Ma Calibre" surprises us with an almost death metal base followed by the last song
"Justice for Saint Mary", an almost classical piece, maybe one of the best tracks of the record and very
intriguing. Afain it could be part of a perfect soundtrack in which DSO mixes everything it can do.
As always, the CD will be strange for those who listen to this peculiar band for the first time, but
certainly loved by those who seek new things in Metal, with no fear, like the band itself in its
compositions. Compositions made with great care and work, and with which was possible to keep the same
intriguing atmosphere throughout the whole record, exactly what keeps the listener interessed since the
very beginning. And if all that wasn't enough, the execution was impressive, superb. An excelent album in
every way. They managed to be faithful to their rule of having neither rules nor limits but, at the same
time, always trying new things.
These kids are unstoppable and fear nothing. Welcome to the spectacle of the most ambitious orchestra.
