Even though only a few details distinguished it visually from the original Golf,Volkswagen—influenced by one of the company’s first female designers—succeeded in transforming the compact car into an affordable sports car for the masses and capturing the mood of the era.\\n\\nGunhild Liljequist—a porcelain painter and chocolatier candy-box designer by trade—was hired on toVolkswagen’s Germany-based Department of Fabrics and Colors in Wolfsburg in 1964 when she was just 28. Her work focused on paint hues, trims and interior detailing, so when the first Golf GTI came into production in the 1970s, she was tasked with designing various elements of its interior from a sporting angle. Liljequist’s genius centered on giving the GTI two distinct, but simple, textile elements: a tartan seat pattern and a golf ball-style gear knob.\\n\\n\\n\\n“Black was sporty, but I also wanted color and quality,” Liljequist said. “I took a lot of inspiration from my travels around Great Britain and I was always taken by high-quality fabrics with checked patterns … you could say that there is an element of British sportiness in the GTI.”\\n\\nAnd the golf ball gear knob?\\n\\n“That was a completely spontaneous idea!” Liljequist said. “I just expressed my sporting and golf associations out loud: ‘how about a golf ball as the gear knob?’”\\n\\nAlthough her ideas faced some resistance, the tartan seat pattern and golf ball knob would become an iconic part of the GTI.\\n\\nFor a woman who personally loved just black and white patterns, color illuminated Liljequist’s professional world throughout her 30-year career at Volkswagen. The 1960 to the 1980s were a highly creative and experimental time in car design, and Liljequist’s work help to influence some of Volkswagen’s most iconic paint hues, trims and interior detailing, while designing some special models of her own.\\n\\n\\n\\nBeyond the Golf GTI, her two most notable contributions to the car world was her 1987 limited edition ‘Etienne Aigner’ Mk1 Golf Cabriolet—a car design influenced by the luxury maker of handbags, luggage and various other leather accessories—and her discovery of an iridescent, pearl color that she applied to a car’s surface, using a transparent foil. The metallic quality of paint on modern cars today is in part the result of Liljuquist’s experimentation in paint and coloring. Liljuquist retired in 1991, but her legacy is literally stitched into the fabric of Volkswagen.\",\n \"starred\": false,\n \"title\": \"How plaid became part of Volkswagen Golf GTI history\",\n \"saved\": 0,\n \"words\": 417,\n \"tags\": \"gti\",\n \"url\": \"https://www.vw.com/en/newsroom/lifestyle-and-heritage/gti-plaid.html\"\n}",

If you want to skip ahead, you can download Apple Frames 3.2 at the end of this story or find it in the [MacStories Shortcuts Archive](https://www.macstories.net/shortcuts/).\\n\\nVersion 3.2 is a major update that introduces brand new frames for the iPhone 15 Pro line, improves the reliability of framing screenshots from devices with the Dynamic Island, and, perhaps most importantly, extends the Frames API with new configuration options to give you even more control over framed images.\\n\\nLet’s dive in.\\n\\n## iPhone 15 Pro Frames and Improved Dynamic Island Support\\n\\nYou may not notice this since the differences between the iPhone 14 Pro and 15 Pro frames are minor, but Apple Frames 3.2 comes with brand new image assets for screenshots taken on an iPhone 15 Pro or 15 Pro Max.\\n\\n![The updated iPhone 15 Pro Max frames.](https://cdn.macstories.net/thursday-21-mar-2024-01-25-20-1710980723617.png)The updated iPhone 15 Pro Max frames.\\n\\nBecause of this change, installing this updated shortcut will require you to re-download a `Frames.zip` file from the MacStories CDN. This is a one-time-only operation that will download and install a folder in iCloud Drive ⇾ Shortcuts containing the graphical assets used by the shortcut. You’ll be prompted to do this the first time you run Apple Frames 3.2 and **won’t be asked again in the future**. Just tap ‘Always Allow’ to continue and wait for the download to finish.\\n\\n![The update process for Apple Frames 3.2.](https://cdn.macstories.net/thursday-21-mar-2024-10-30-19-1711013426067.png)The update process for Apple Frames 3.2.\\n\\nSpeaking of modern iPhones, I’ve also improved the logic inside the shortcut that deals with framing screenshots from devices with the Dynamic Island. Without getting too deep into the technicalities of what I did here, you should know that the new actions in Apple Frames 3.2 will make for more robust and easy-to-update image overlaying in the future.\\n\\n## Frames API: Files Picker, Spacing Controls, and Sorting Options\\n\\nI introduced the **Frames API** last year as a way to script the behavior of Apple Frames using other shortcuts, launchers, or automation apps for Mac such as [Raycast](https://www.raycast.com/) and [Alfred](https://www.alfredapp.com/). As [I wrote in the original post](https://www.macstories.net/stories/apple-frames-3-1-extending-screenshot-automation-with-the-new-apple-frames-api/):\\n\\n> The big change in Apple Frames 3.1 is the availability of a lightweight API that lets you control the shortcut’s behavior with simple text commands. It may seem silly to make an “API” for a shortcut running on your iPhone or Mac, but this is, after all, a little[programming interface](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/API)for Apple Frames, so I think it’s only fair to call it that.\\n\\n Here’s the gist: you can now script Apple Frames with commands that tell it where to take images from (**input commands**) and where to save the framed images (**output commands**). You can still run Apple Frames manually like you’ve always done; however, if you want to save even more time, you can also program Apple Frames 3.1 to get screenshots from a specific source and perform a specific action with the output without having to manually pick images or options from a list.\\n\\n\\nIf you haven’t played around with the Frames API yet, I highly recommend that you go back and read the documentation and instructions [here](https://www.macstories.net/stories/apple-frames-3-1-extending-screenshot-automation-with-the-new-apple-frames-api/). The story also includes a few downloadable examples of the input and output commands supported by the Frames API, which allow you to, effectively, **turn Apple Frames into a system-wide utility** that you can invoke from any app or existing automated workflow.\\n\\nApple Frames 3.2 extends the Frames API with three new features.\\n\\nThe first one is an update to the `pick` input command, which now supports either picking screenshots from the Photos app (as was the case before) or – new in 3.2 – selecting them from a Files/Finder document browser.\\n\\n![Running Apple Frames with the Files picker.](https://cdn.macstories.net/thursday-21-mar-2024-11-28-10-1711016894389.png)Running Apple Frames with the Files picker.\\n\\nWith this update, instead of just `pick`, you now have to pass either `pick(Photos)` or `pick(Files)` as an input command to Apple Frames via the API. Of course, [all the other input commands](https://www.macstories.net/stories/apple-frames-3-1-extending-screenshot-automation-with-the-new-apple-frames-api/) introduced in Apple Frames 3.1 are still supported.\\n\\nIf you want to run Apple Frames with a Files picker by default, this is all you have to do thanks to version 3.2 and the updated Frames API:\\n\\n![How to run Apple Frames with the Files/Finder picker in version 3.2.](https://cdn.macstories.net/thursday-21-mar-2024-11-28-56-1711016940090.png)How to run Apple Frames with the Files/Finder picker in version 3.2.\\n\\nThe second addition to the Frames API is the ability to control spacing between images. By default, if you pass multiple screenshots to Apple Frames, the shortcut will frame and combine them into a single image, like this:\\n\\n![The default spacing between images in Apple Frames.](https://cdn.macstories.net/thursday-21-mar-2024-10-48-38-1711014522236.png)The default spacing between images in Apple Frames.\\n\\nAs I explained last year, there is an API override to disable merging, but I was recently asked by [Jonathan](https://www.macstories.net/author/jonathan/) to add another option: a way to make framed screenshots look “less tight” when merged into a single composite image. Thus the `+mergeSpacing(n)` override was born.\\n\\nBy default, Apple Frames uses a default value of 60 pixels as the spacing between images. If you find this value too low or high, you can now override it with the `+mergeSpacing(n)` input flag, where `n` stands for any numeric value you want. Here’s the same image I used above, but this time with the `+mergeSpacing(420)` override to make framed screenshots more spaced out:\\n\\n![Increased spacing in Apple Frames 3.2.](https://cdn.macstories.net/thursday-21-mar-2024-11-06-45-1711015609602.png)Increased spacing in Apple Frames 3.2.\\n\\nAnd this is all you have to do to run Apple Frames with this setting:\\n\\n![Remember: when using the Frames API, you always have to include an input command for the source of images, such as
pick
. In this image, I ran Apple Frames with the Photos picker and increased spacing.](https://cdn.macstories.net/image-1711017040155.png)Remember: when using the Frames API, you always have to include an input command for the source of images, such as
pick
. In this image, I ran Apple Frames with the Photos picker and increased spacing.\\n\\nIf you want, you can also change the default value of 60 by editing the following action inside the Shortcuts editor:\\n\\n![The variable that controls spacing.](https://cdn.macstories.net/image-1711017199652.png)The variable that controls spacing.\\n\\nThe third new feature is something I should have done years ago: you can now choose whether you want to see your latest screenshots first when running Apple Frames in manual picking mode, or if you want to see your oldest screenshots first instead.\\n\\nThe default behavior of Apple Frames has always been to show your latest screenshots first, meaning the image grid in the Photos picker is sorted in reverse chronological order. However, I (and a small percentage of Apple Frames users) like to see our oldest screenshots first. The reasons for this are twofold:\\n\\n * We prune our screenshots album frequently, so scrolling from the oldest screenshots to the latest ones isn’t a huge deal since the list is short.\\n * Selecting screenshots from left to right (oldest to newest) will also combine them from left to right in the shortcut, matching their order in the picker’s grid.\\n\\n![Oldest screenshots first (left) Vs. latest screenshots first.](https://cdn.macstories.net/thursday-21-mar-2024-11-12-08-1711015931638.png)Oldest screenshots first (left) Vs. latest screenshots first.\\n\\nSince I understand the value of both options, I’ve made this behavior configurable in Apple Frames 3.2. You will be asked at setup to pick your preferred sorting order, but you can always change the `Oldest First` variable inside the shortcut later. By default, it’s set to `False`, meaning that your most recent screenshots are shown first; if you set it to `True`, your oldest ones will be shown first in the photo picker instead.\\n\\n![You can set the 'Oldest First' variable during the shortcut's setup flow.](https://cdn.macstories.net/cleanshot-2024-03-21-at-11-44-11-2x-1711024378272.png)You can set the 'Oldest First' variable during the shortcut's setup flow.\\n\\n![To change the photo picker's sorting, tweak this variable.](https://cdn.macstories.net/image-1711017272794.png)To change the photo picker's sorting, tweak this variable.\\n\\nThe Frames API offers a pretty large selection of options and flags now, which is why I’m going to dive deeper into its more advanced functionalities in this week’s issue of MacStories Weekly for [Club members](https://club.macstories.net/). In the story, I will share more advanced examples of the Frames API and explain how you can chain input and output commands with overrides to turn Apple Frames into the ultimate screenshot-framing utility for all Apple platforms.\\n\\nTo get MacStories Weekly, you just need to sign up for a basic Club MacStories plan at $5/month or $50/year [here](https://club.macstories.net/plans) or by using the buttons below:\\n\\n## Download Apple Frames 3.2\\n\\nApple Frames continues to be a labor of love that I build primarily for myself, but which I know is also used by thousands of designers, developers, and Apple users who want a nicer way to share screenshots. I’m especially happy with the latest automation capabilities of the Frames API, so I hope you’ll find this shortcut as useful as I do on a daily basis.\\n\\nYou can download Apple Frames 3.2 below and find it in the [MacStories Shortcuts Archive](https://www.macstories.net/shortcuts/).\",\n \"starred\": true,\n \"title\": \"Apple Frames 3.2 Brings iPhone 15 Pro Frames, Files Picker, and Adjustable Spacing\",\n \"saved\": 0,\n \"words\": 1395,\n \"tags\": \"i, automation\",\n \"url\": \"https://www.macstories.net/ios/apple-frames-3-2-brings-iphone-15-pro-frames-files-picker-and-adjustable-spacing/\"\n}",

With blistering 808s footwork as her starting point, she’s brought in African and Indian hand drumming, Reichian minimalism, horror film samples, HBCU drumlines, and ballet soundtracks, each bringing out new contours in her unique percussive touch. On [_Akoma_](https://jlin.bandcamp.com/album/akoma), the various rhythms, influences, and sounds she’s experimented throughout her career come together in lockstep: this record contains Pulitzer-recognized, concert hall minimalism alongside some of her most danceable tracks yet, in a deft display that the two don’t need to be diametrically opposed. Unified by Jlin’s signature eerie, futuristic affect, _Akoma_ is an example of an artist at her prime, a sampler of everything that makes her one of electronic music’s most forward-thinking composers.\\n\\nWhereas her solo work has tended toward dark, hermetically-sealed beats, _Akoma_ introduces expansive synth atmospheres that showcase her rich tonal sensibility. On “Iris,” triplet bass rhythms dance around a spacey synth that alternates between reverbed-out sustain and a choppy transform filter. “Auset” gets even more cosmic with arpeggios that float above heavy, peak-time kicks, jackhammer snares cutting through the Drexciyan murk. “Open Canvas”—a reference to the way she[ begins](https://www.thefader.com/2017/05/02/jlin-black-origami-interview) every composition on a blank sheet—builds from a bubbling cauldron of bass, before introducing a transcendent harp sample. And “Grannie’s Cherry Pie” is pure kinetics, eminently danceable and battleable, propelled by a blissful synth that soars above its bassline and razor-sharp claps.\\n\\nOther tracks recall familiar experiments in a novel way: “Challenge (To Be Continued II)” is a sequel of the final track on [_Black Origami_](https://jlin.bandcamp.com/album/black-origami), fusing spacious trap rhythms with hand-drumming samples reminiscent of [ABADIR](https://svbkvlt.bandcamp.com/album/mutate)’s _maqsoum_ manipulation, topping it all off with HBCU drumline flair. “Eye Am” is a sonic[ reimagining](https://toneglow.substack.com/p/tone-glow-129-jlin) of Kitty Phetla’s rain-dance-inspired ballet[ choreography](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xqiQ5csBtFg), weaving rain sticks and tabla drums in between ritualistic melodies. “Sodalite” and “The Precision of Infinity,” for their part, display Jlin’s modern classical sensibilities in chopping up string and piano samples with a mixture of reverence and abandon, teasing out their microrhythmic complexity. And while familiar symbols of her preoccupation with darkness reveal themselves in _Mortal Kombat_ samples, “Summon” conjures an unease that unfolds over four minutes of erratic, atonal string samples. With _Akoma_, Jlin’s compositions display the kind of rhythmic and affective mastery that she’s been working toward throughout her career thus far. \\n\\n![](https://f4.bcbits.com/img/a2431125443_3.jpg)\\n\\n**Akoma** by Jlin\\n\\n1. Splitter, for example, is basically a wing on the nose that is flat to the pavement. The splitter diverts air to the nose of the car to create downforce. Downforce is good.\\n\\n“Splitter, final answer. Oh, wait. [Dzus](https://www.grainger.com/search?searchQuery=dzus+fasteners) fasteners! A _‘d’_ followed by _‘z’_, how cool is that?” — _[Cameron Neveu](https://www.hagerty.com/media/author/cameron-neveu/)_\\n\\n## Giubo\\n\\n![Rob Siegel - Preparing for the big road trip - IMG_0059](https://hagerty-media-prod.imgix.net/2022/04/Rob-Siegel-Preparing-for-the-big-road-trip-IMG_0059-scaled.jpg?auto=format%2Ccompress&fit=crop&h=768&ixlib=php-3.3.0&w=1024) This badly cracked giubo was found and replaced before a road trip.Rob Siegel\\n\\n“I think the weirdest car word I’ve ever encountered is giubo, pronounced jew-boh. It’s a flexible coupling that allows rotational torque to be transmitted between a spinning shaft and the piece to which it is mated. Generally constructed of rubber, it corrects for misalignment in the system and dampens vibration. Commonly misspelled as ‘guibo,’ the term is a blend word derived from the Italian giunto, for ‘joint,’ and the engineer who patented it, Antonio Boschi, for use in the Alfa Romeo 1900. It is sometimes called a flex disc and is closely related to the rag joint.” — [_Stefan Lombard_](https://www.hagerty.com/media/author/stefan-lombard/)\\n\\n“It is also known as a Rotoflex coupling, which is not as fun as my Laycock Layrub coupling suggestion.” — _Aaron Robinson_\\n\\n***\\n\\n_Check out the_[_Hagerty Media homepage_](https://www.hagerty.com/media/)_so you don’t miss a single story, or better yet,**bookmark it**.
