  • 40 million of the 100 million migrants living in OECD member countries originate from other OECD member country;
  • 7 million of the 60 million migrants with non-OECD origins are Africans;
  • Half of this 7 million are from Sub-Saharan Africa out of which 1.5 million are West Africans.

Climate change

Is climate change real?

Is-global-warming-a-hoax (quora.com)

Good resources: tmrow.com. Overview of graphs:

  • Temperature anomalies in the last 11 000 years
  • Atmospheric CO2 concentration in the last 40 000 to 800 000 years
  • Relative changes in radiative forcing in 2011 compared to 1750
  • Where do greenhouse gases come from?
  • Average personal carbon footprint by country in 2013
  • Greenhouse gas intensity of transportation modes
  • Greenhouse gas intensity of electricity production modes

Myths

[skeptical science](https://skepticalscience.com/)
Climate Myth What the Science Says
"Climate's changed before" Climate reacts to whatever forces it to change at the time; humans are now the dominant forcing.
"It's the sun" In the last 35 years of global warming, sun and climate have been going in opposite directions
"It's not bad" Negative impacts of global warming on agriculture, health & environment far outweigh any positives.
"There is no consensus" 97% of climate experts agree humans are causing global warming.
"It's cooling" The last decade 2000-2009 was the hottest on record.
"Models are unreliable" Models successfully reproduce temperatures since 1900 globally, by land, in the air and the ocean.
"Temp record is unreliable" The warming trend is the same in rural and urban areas, measured by thermometers and satellites.
"Animals and plants can adapt" Global warming will cause mass extinctions of species that cannot adapt on short time scales.
"It hasn't warmed since 1998" Every part of the Earth's climate system has continued warming since 1998, with 2015 shattering temperature records.
"Antarctica is gaining ice" Satellites measure Antarctica losing land ice at an accelerating rate.

Placebo effect

5 myth: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ESMooFO0aaY&feature=youtu.be

  • regression to the mean: treatment starts when sickness peaks
  • response bias: respond in accordance with social norms

3 things influence placebo effect:

  • expectation
  • A thorough discussion with patient can be medicine (sprechende medizin)
  • Conditioning (drug in conjunction with strangly tasting substance)

Nocebo-effect: Expectation of certain adverse effects will make them come true

Myth

  • Mercury Thimerosal is no longer used in children's vaccines in the United States, except some types of flu shots "...current scientific consensus has found no convincing scientific evidence supporting claims that thiomersal has such effects" Thiomersal controversy

  • Does the scientific community support vaccination? The scientific community strongly supports the use of vaccines, based on decades of experience and research showing vaccines are effective and safe (source).

  • Do vaccines cause autism and other health problems? The Lancet in 2010 also retracted a 1998 study that claimed to tie MMR vaccines to autism (source).

Nutrition

Sugar

Glycemic index

measure of blood-glucose raising potential of the carbohydrate content of a food. Reference is pure glucose = 100.

  • > 70 is high
  • 56-69 moderate
  • < 55 low

Glycemic load

takes into account the amount of carbohydrate (typical serving of food).

  • < 10 low
  • 11-19 moderate
  • > 20 high

Sweeteners

have no calories, because they are inert (don't participate in chemical reactions in the body), so the body cant draw any energy from these. Some studies have shown that they might actually be doing something the body (e.g. increase appetite). Could influence microbiome, but only in large quantities.

  • Freifahrtscheins-Falle
  • Over sensibilisation through too much sugar
  • usually come with less nutritious food

Glucose intolerance Body's response to sugar not working properly. Insulin to lower blood sugar level. diabetes type 2 patients need to inject insulin.
