We notice this on JupyterLab 2: the code folding gutter is hiding the underlying cell's leftmost characters:

but our users report it occasionally in JupyterLab 3.0 as well, and when these users click on such a cell, the problem goes away. Given that we have no reproducible examples, it's hard to diagnose.
