Job Responsibilities
The emerging use of technology and electronic information retrieval systems has modified and evolved the job responsibilities of information specialists. Knowledge of electronic records applications and other technology systems used for maintaining and storing data is increasingly important. Information specialists are also increasingly using technologically enabled solutions to organize information, secure files, analyze and manage data, communicate with organizational stakeholders and train users.

The competencies required for success in an information specialist position include expert knowledge of various research methods, bibliographic tools and electronic information retrieval systems, excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of people. Many information specialists hold degrees in engineering, information technology, management information systems, library and information science, business management or other technology-related discipline. Beyond a strong academic record, employers also look for detail-oriented individuals with quantitative skills and interests. Information specialist jobs are best for individuals with demonstrated leadership potential, excellent communication and problem-solving skills, a strong work ethic, and one to three years of related work experience.
Career Prospects
Experienced information specialists can progress their careers by moving into higher-paying supervisory or management positions. Some information specialists may remain in the same role but advance through technical training, post-secondary coursework or advanced specialty certification. Information specialists with technical training generally have better prospects for career advancement. Information specialists with expertise in using electronic information management technologies may switch to occupations in the IT industry.

PayScale indicates information specialists in the United States average a base salary range of $40,244 to $69,406, with a bonus potential range of $968 to $4,013. Information specialists employed by companies offering profit sharing programs can expect additional earnings ranging from $1,007 to $4,895. The estimated total compensation for information specialists, inclusive of salary, bonus and profit sharing ranges from $37,332 to $65,566, as of June 2010.
