My first experience in working on a project that is not merely like all university end of semester group projects. Scrum and CDIO frameworks were "sort of" applied in a project along the fourth semester (2º year) of ISEP BSc in Informatics Engineering course, in which three teams of 8 students developed software for a client.

The client for this edition was SONAE-Bit, that brought up the challenge of obtaining instant feedback of consumers in their retail shops. As mobile applications emerge into humans daily lives, retailers can take advantage of such transformation in order to obtain feedback from products while consumers shop and use these. The vision described a mobile application that allowed customers to scan products QR and Barcodes in order to review these, as well as joining open surveys about a specific product or category. To motivate customers to provide feedback and retain app usage time, gamification was applied, providing points to customers which would position these on a product, category and global ranking ladder.

To fulfill SONAE Bit vision, a monolith serving app domain features and an Android application were implemented in Java, composing the following tech stack:

  • Jersey for web services
  • Eclipse Link JPA for data layer abstraction
  • MySQL as the database
  • Jenkins for building and testing software
  • SonarQube for reporting Java code issues

In the end, altough our solution was not particularly ready for production, of all three teams participating in this challenge, our team was considered the one that had the best solution and provided more value by SONAE-Bit, and as a reward for our commitment and effort, SONAE-Bit invited us to participate in Tech Retail Week 2018 - the "web summit" of retail tech - covering all entry and trip expenses to London. Up to this event I had never traveled abroad or flew in a plane, so needless to say that the experience was very rewarding.
