Half-day tours

KÃ¥rsa waterfalls

Follow the trail towards the Kårsavagge valley. After 600 m the path divides. Continue on parallel with the Abiskoeatnu river. The path here goes through a park-like birch forest and then on boardwalks across marshland. Eventually stately pine trees reveal themselves in the forest, and when you reach Kårsajåkken, there is a sparse primeval pine forest. You will find both capercaillies and squirrels here. From the bridge and upwards, there are many fine small waterfalls.

Ridonjira nature path

Follow the KÃ¥rsavagge trail to Ridonjira. Here the nature trail branches off and follows the brook up through a birch forest that is splendid in places. Higher up there is a series of waterfalls. Above the tree line, the trail crosses the course of the brook. You come out on flowering heaths and meadows. The abundance of flowers is due to lime in the soil as well as the good circulation of groundwater. The path goes under the cableway and then branches off on a steep upward slope to the top station. From the top station a trip down on the cableway is recommended. You can also choose to walk down on the slalom hill.

Nissonjåkka’s suspension bridge

Follow Kungsleden (the King’s Trail) 4 km to the suspension bridge. Kungsleden is very easy to walk and varied on this section. Almost 1 km after the marble quarry, the path goes down an edge and across a small bridge. From here traces of several of Nissonjåkka’s older courses are visible in the terrain. The ground is inundated here during years with strong spring floods. On the other side of the suspension bridge, there is a rest area with a windbreak and fireplace.

Full-day tours

There are many excellent, longer tour destinations. Examples are the Kårsavagge valley, the Paddus sacrificial site, Nissunjåkka canyon and Abiskojaure lake. You can get more information on these and other tour destinations inside the Naturum visitor centre and in the book Abisko Turtips, which is on sale.

Hike to Segla

4km, 2-4h, demanding | Segla - Hiking Trail on Senja | Outtt

Segla is Senja’s most popular hike. A steep trail leads up the southern side of the mountain to the peak 639 meters above the ocean below. At the top, there are wonderful views of Mefjord and the surrounding mountains. The sheer western cliff will give an adrenaline kick to anyone game enough to peer over the edge.

The trail is steep but does not have a lot of exposure, just stay to the right as your climb up the mountain. Be aware of rocks loosened by other hikers above you. The top can feel a bit scary if you have a fear of heights, particularly when it’s crowded. Try an evening hike to watch the sunset and you might even get the peak to yourself, for a little while at least.

Hike to Hesten

3.7 km, 2-3h, medium | Hesten - Hiking Trail on Senja | Outtt

Instead of climbing Segla, climb the sister-mountain Hesten to have a nice view to Segla -> Hiking Segla in Senja Norway

Hesten is Segla’s neighboring mountain and where most of the popular photos of Segla found on Instagram are taken.

Much like Segla, Hesten has a sharp drop into the fjord below, but doesn’t reach quite as tall, at 556 meters above the sea. Apart from Segla, Hesten delivers wonderful views over Mefjorden to the west, and Inste Kongen Mountain and Korkedalen Valley to the north.

The trail is very popular and you can expect to hike in a queue and meet many people at the top, regardless of the season. If you have a fear of heights, consider stopping on the ridge between Hesten and Stavelitippen, about 100 meters below Hesten’s peak, which still provides a great view of Segla and Korkedalen.
