Sample usage:

import nbd

with nbd.DiskImageReader("/tmp/test.qcow2", "test") as reader:
    # read 1024 bytes starting from offset 0
    reader.read(0, 1024)

qemu-nbd must be installed on the system. This can consume any virtual disk format known to qemu-img. DiskImageReader is just a helper meant to make consuming images easy. Feel free to use NBDClient() by itself to connect to any NBD server that does not need TLS or authentication.

Here's an example using the NBDclient() directly:

# older versions of qemu-nbd do not have the --export-name option
# setting -export-name will use new style authentication in qemu-nbd
qemu-nbd -k /tmp/test.sock /tmp/test.qcow2
client = nbd.NBDClient()
# if new style authentication is used, set export_name
# here
client.connect(unix_socket="/tmp/test.sock")
client.read(0, 1024)
client.close()

Is it maybe placed in some installable repo?
