Driving Tips

GENERAL STUFF

Keep looking around you, keep practicing. There are a lot of things to do just right all at the same time and the only way to get good is practice.

You don't need to see the side of your own car in the side mirrors. Adjust them outward until things at the edge of the rear-view mirror are just coming into view in the side mirrors.

Leave the radio off until your're familiar enough with the driving controls to not fumble for e.g. the wiper control. Adjust the radio or your phone playlist etc. while you're parked. Apparently WA made it illegal to manipulate a phone in any way even while at a red light or stop sign. Find out what your specific rules are.

If some yahoo in a BMW just really needs to pass you, it's better to let them do it. At least that way they're ahead of you where you can keep an eye on them. And the faster they go, the sooner they get to their destination and the less time you have to share the road with that particular jerk.

CITY STUFF

Avoid busy streets and rush hour if you can, until you are comfortable with making the car do what you mean for it to do. (I know this may not always be an option.)

When you're sharing the road, expect other drivers to do the most knuckleheaded things - that way they won't take you by surprise when someone eventually does those things.

Drive to get there, not to pass people. I see so many drivers acting like they measure progress by how many other vehicles they've passed. That's the wrong attitude. Try to avoid running late because stress is distracting. If you are behind schedule, avoid thinking in terms of making up time in traffic. It won't make you not late if you're already late.

Get actually in to the intersection to wait for your left turn. Red doesn't mean you're doomed if you get caught offside, it just means "don't enter" and the traffic lights have a buffer where both directions are red, for people to finish turning.

FREEWAY STUFF

On the freeway, leave lots of space in front of you. It's okay for other drivers to enter your lane. If they fill up your space, leave more. You want to have time to stop and a couple of extra car lengths aren't worth giving up that safety margin. Especially in stop-and-go conditions, you can often avoid having to hit the brakes altogether by proceeding at a steady pace. Let the impatient ones ahead of you work the pedals and waste gas and stress, you'll still get there at the same time they do.

Conversely to the previous point, go faster if there's room. Please don't block up the left lane by going only the speed limit when everybody else wants to go faster. Either speed up yourself or move over to let people past. They'll get angry if you take up the fast lane, and angry driving is unsafe.

When you need to get in a different lane, prefer merging behind the car that's next to you - let off the gas or actually brake, but unless there's no room behind and loads in front, avoid speeding up to get ahead of someone when you need to be in their lane.

Hit the gas hard when you need to go fast. For example, onramps. You want to be already travelling at freeway speed when you merge on, not in the travel lane and still getting up to speed. If you're at the head of the line at a red light, probably accelerate a little more than usual to avoid making the leadfoots get all antsy and wanting to jump lanes.
