set -e, -u, -o, -x pipefail

The set lines

  • These lines deliberately cause your script to fail. Wait, what? Believe me, this is a good thing.
  • With these settings, certain common errors will cause the script to immediately fail, explicitly and loudly. Otherwise, you can get hidden bugs that are discovered only when they blow up in production.
  • set -euxo pipefail is short for:

The Rules of React

All libraries have subtle rules that you have to follow for them to work well. Often these are implied and undocumented rules that you have to learn as you go. This is an attempt to document the rules of React renders. Ideally a type system could enforce it.

What Functions Are "Pure"?

A number of methods in React are assumed to be "pure".

On classes that's the constructor, getDerivedStateFromProps, shouldComponentUpdate and render.

About this

This list has the goal of helping developers interested in contributing to the Go language but are unsure of where to start. This was not generated manually so some functions and methods here may not require examples (maybe because they are too simple, e.g .String()) and some of these may only make sense in a package level example (which are not considered for this list yet). Use your best judgment and check the documentation before you open up a CL to add an example.

You should also search in gerrit for open CLs that are already adding examples.

I will try to keep this list as up to date as possible. If you find any mistakes, please comment below and I will try to fix it.

Using the classnames.bind method

Many people who work with React are familiar with the excellent classnames library. If you aren't familiar, it provides a simple function for gluing classnames together. In web programming in general, there are many times that we need to add or remove multiple classes based on conditional logic. The classnames library makes this easy.

More and more developers are embracing CSS Next and the power of CSS modules. However, when you add CSS modules to your react components, working with classnames gets more difficult. Typically, CSS modules is implemented with class name mangling. Transforming human readable class name strings into unique identifiers helps ensure that every class name in your app is unique.

This means that you can write your component CSS in isolation without worrying about the dreaded class name collisions that have plagued CSS

Concise guide to golang/dep

Overview

This gist is based on the information available at golang/dep, only slightly more terse and annotated with a few notes and links primarily for my own personal benefit. It's public in case this information is helpful to anyone else as well.

I initially advocated Glide for my team and then, more recently, vndr. I've also taken the approach of exerting direct control over what goes into vendor/ in my Dockerfiles, and also work from isolated GOPATH environments on my system per project to ensure that dependencies are explicitly found under vendor/.

At the end of the day, vendoring (and committing vendor/) is about being in control of your dependencies and being able to achieve reproducible builds. While you can achieve this manually, things that are nice to have in a vendoring tool include:

Thinking metrics on React applications

In regular websites, it is common to send multiple events to track user clicks. Single Page Applications change the way you look at metrics. This is a talk about a simple pattern we created at Globo.com to manage a metrics layer for http://globoplay.globo.com. The talk will cover how to track user flow using Google Analytics and other services. We solved the challenge of tying metrics and components, keeping information across pages and having global data. Also some React, React Router and React Side Effects concepts like context, higher order components, history state will be covered.
