Mirador provides the functionality of adding and comparing images by providing IIIF manifests that Mirador then uses to retrieve the images.
To add the first image, click right in the middle of the page to add an item, then paste a IIIF manifest URL (a couple examples below) into the "addNewObject" box. To add additional items, you can click the grid icon in the upper-left of any image window in Mirador's "workspace" and select where this new image will be slotted. Rinse and repeat for each one.

As mentioned, IIIF provides the ability to select particular regions of an image. To demonstrate this capability, we can take a newspaper browsing interface that has been fitted with an interface to grab regions of an image.
Click the link below for the newspaper interface. In the upper-right, switch to single page mode. At that point, a target-like icon should appear. Clicking that icon turns on an interface where you can select regions of the current image (can be a bit tricky to know which image you're on while scrolling up and down) and it will return a URL that is that region only of the original page image.
Please keep in mind, these are all just proofs of concept and demonstrations - hiccups and rough edges may abound!
