A film that is not nearly as great as we are expected to believe and the first half was utterly infuriating in its geeky indulgence - they just never SHUT UP! I was constantly in mind of Norma Desmond, "There once was a time in this business when I had the eyes of the whole world! But that wasn't good enough for them. Oh no! They had to have the ears of the whole world too. So they opened their big mouths and out came talk. Talk! TALK!"
It wouldn't have been so annoying if the narrative wasn't so messy and disjointed (it's just a cop-out to defend it as intentional) and it would have been tolerable (just) if there was any semblance of character development in all the endless chatter - as entertaining as the performers are (I loved Tom Hardy's swishy nonchalance as he seemed to be flirting with the entire cast but Hollywood STILL doesn't know what to do with lovely Marion Cotillard), they are never really much more beyond pretty props or fun caricatures.
No, depth of character has to take a back seat to make way for the relentless smug eulogising of the ground rules and ideas behind its big set-piece.
But oh, what a set-piece. It really is quite stupendous. By the time of the closing tease of its perfect last shot, it was starting to overstay its welcome but I had long ago conceded that forgiveness is most certainly in order and was busy trying to put my eyeballs back in their sockets while trying desperately to stop my jaw from swinging off its hinges. Yes, it really is that good.
But did anyone really CARE about the characters??
