Hollywood supply chain

In one Critical Path episode (can't remember which), Horace posits that Hollywood is like a distributed functional organization:

  • Workers are organized by specialty (acting, rigging, costuming, etc)
  • Bands of workers are assembled for specific projects
  • The workers are disbanded when the project is finished

The main difference between the Hollywood model vs a functional organization is that the actors, etc are all essentially freelance rather than belonging to a given company.
