Overview
OpenStreetMap (www.openstreetmap.org) is a worldwide project which aims to create and share geospatial information to anyone who wants them. The project was started because most maps you think of as free actually have legal or technical restrictions on their use, holding back people from using them in creative, productive or unexpected ways.
More and more people are contributing and using the data in various ways. Local government units and other government agencies are encouraged to use and update the data so that the public may benefit from the shared information particularly for disaster risk reduction.
This activity is a beginners workshop to contributing to OSM. At the end of the activity, the participants should be able to easily contribute to OSM using their own local knowledge and the tools that the project uses.
Objectives
At the end of the workshop, the participants should be able to:
- Understand the basic principles of how OpenStreetMap works;
- Have a working understanding of GPS/SmartPhones and their use in collecting data from the field;
- Learn how to use the iD OSM editors and understand how points, lines, and areas can represent things on a map;
- Use the data from the OSM database in a various format useful to the participants;
- Understand the role of OSM in crisis mapping.
Equipment / Facilities
- Projector (at least one, two would be very nice, with an extra computer)
- Participants bring their own laptops, or available computers (computer laboratory setup) (Strongly recommended: participants should use a mouse with a scroll button)
- Reliable and fast Internet connectivity (the available bandwidth is the only restriction to the maximum number of participants.)

Management: Always designate a lead

Sizing: Ideal ratio 1 (primary trainer) : 5 (participants) + 1 ("coach / secondary trainer) (i.e. 30 participants ÷ 5 = 6; 6 +1 = 7 trainers)
- for field activities, 1 Coach for every group of 5-7 participants
- ensure participants are of legal age, 18+
- ensure prior coordination with community/neighborhood/barangay/appropriate authorities

Connectivity: up to 5 users for each mobile access point * if it's impossible to pre-test Internet connectivity, divide classes into small groups and share computers to limit bandwidth. This is essential for iD editing. (Shutdown unused computers to limit bandwidth use)

- strongly recommend the use of scroll mice
- iD editor requires a modern browser. Recommend: Firefox, Chrome/Chromium

- make sure aerial imagery is available for area of interest
- recommend: comfortable clothing, sunblock, hats and parasols. Clipboard (for Field Papers), external batteries/PowerBank/extra batteries for SmartPhones and GNSr devices

Appreciation/Quickie
Best for BYOD/mind-seeding/marketing events, for participants without prior mapping experience, and using only the iD editor, focused on developing armchair mapping skills. No fieldwork. Should be suitable for any age level.

Essentials
Using iD editor, focused on basic field data collection and ground mapping with FieldPapers and SmartPhones for community and DRR exposures mapping.
Duration: 2 days.
Level: No experience required.
Intermediate
Using JOSM editor and focusing on advanced mapping techniques, relations, GPS data collection, extracting data from OSM for other uses (i.e. GIS)
Duration: 3 days
Level: demonstrable OSM experience, or has attended a Quickie or Essentials course.
Advanced/Training-of-Trainer
More advanced JOSM mapping, but specifically focused on developing trainers' methods and techniques
Duration: 3 days
Level: participated in an Intermediate course.
